Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | Launched in 2013, the Department of Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is the first new science department in the College of Arts and Sciences in nearly 40 years. Applied Physical Sciences has united numerous scientific entities on campus to further its mission of finding interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems. Its newest endeavor, BeAM (Be A Maker), is a university wide initiative that incorporates Making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM is comprised of several spaces, including a makerspace in Hanes Art Center, Carmichael Residence Hall, and a 3,400 square foot Makerspace in Murray Hall, all of which serves the entire UNC community. |
Position Summary | This position serves as a scientific illustrator/graphic designer/concept artist to provide illustrations, poster design, and cover design to researchers. These services are used for publications, grant applications, seminars, grant symposia, internal and external displays, events, functions and the like. The graphic designer will support graphic art, 3D graphics, video animation, as needed, will offer creative input, training and recommendations to scientists on a variety of projects enabling them to pursue their own efforts. The designer will be able to communicate with the scientific team at a collaborative level when interpreting data and information for illustrative purposes of publication or presentation, seminars and lectures. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Bachelor’s degree or minor in scientific illustration and/or graphic design. Knowledge in Cinema4D; Blender. Experience in animation and 3D graphic design to support videographers. |
