Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Launched in 2013, the Department of Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is the first new science department in the College of Arts and Sciences in nearly 40 years. Applied Physical Sciences has united numerous scientific entities on campus to further its mission of finding interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems. Its newest endeavor, BeAM (Be A Maker), is a university wide initiative that incorporates Making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM is comprised of several spaces, including a makerspace in Hanes Art Center, Carmichael Residence Hall, and a 3,400 square foot Makerspace in Murray Hall, all of which serves the entire UNC community.
Position Summary
This position serves as a scientific illustrator/graphic designer/concept artist to provide illustrations, poster design, and cover design to researchers. These services are used for publications, grant applications, seminars, grant symposia, internal and external displays, events, functions and the like. The graphic designer will support graphic art, 3D graphics, video animation, as needed, will offer creative input, training and recommendations to scientists on a variety of projects enabling them to pursue their own efforts. The designer will be able to communicate with the scientific team at a collaborative level when interpreting data and information for illustrative purposes of publication or presentation, seminars and lectures.
The job entails:
  • supporting the research team in communicating their research by producing presentations and visualizations of diverse scientific concepts.
  • Producing presentation materials for internal and external documents.
  • Create illustrations for a wide range of subjects.
  • Brainstorm with researchers to create novel ways of visualizing difficult concepts.
  • Providing cover designs for scientific publications.
  • Developing three-dimensional models and images for presentations.
  • Creating images and photos for web sites and interactive media.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign.
  • Experience working independently and collaboratively with a diverse group of clients and their staff; sound organizational and detail-oriented skills in a high-volume production unit.
  • Experience in translating use of graphics to publication.
  • Experience with illustrations for poster design, book layout, cover design used for publications and events from production to completion.
  • Experience in an academic research or higher education setting.
  • Experience in producing illustrations and artwork that are informative, instructional and educational.
  • Experience in producing infographics for print, web and video.
  • Orientation toward deadlines when managing time.
  • Good project management skills, including attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple simultaneous tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment: client interaction, resource allocation, timing of deliverables, etc.
  • Willingness to work in an animal-related research environment and sign an employee confidentiality agreement.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into simple graphics.
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Cloud products and traditional media.
  • Artistic ability and technical skills in 2D, 3D, and video formats Education.
  • Minimum of 1 years scientific illustrating/graphic design experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or minor in scientific illustration and/or graphic design.
Knowledge in Cinema4D; Blender.
Experience in animation and 3D graphic design to support videographers.
