ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The University of South Florida (USF) Institute for Applied Engineering (IAE) is a Florida not-for-profit corporation and direct support organization within the USF ecosystem. The IAE mission is to provide agile, high value engineering products and services to enhance the performance, effectiveness, and capabilities of its customers to include the Department of Defense and other federal and industry partners.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Engineer I is a direct engineering contributor that collaborates with peer engineers, interns, and engineering leadership on development, design, fabrication, testing, documentation, and delivery of products and services related to applied research and technology development consistent with the IAE mission. This position may occasionally participate in customer communications and new business development with engineering leadership and staff oversight. This position will work in a team including full-time engineering staff, interns, and project managers on assigned project tasks while providing guidance and mentorship to interns and reporting technical progress and status to project leadership. The Engineer I supports administrative tasks related to reporting project performance and deliverables.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Fundamental understanding of systems and software development lifecycle frameworks (e.g., System V, Agile, Waterfall). General understanding of engineering principles consistent with formal education, training, and experience (e.g., mechanical, electrical, RF, software engineering). Some hands-on experience with basic bench prototyping, experimentation, and development. Basic understanding of cross-disciplinary skills such as: computer-aided design (CAD), 3D printing, understanding of basic PCB fabrication, electronics bread boarding and test equipment, fundamental modeling and simulation (e.g., Matlab), understanding computer operating systems and scripting, use of basic hand and power tools, and basic soldering skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborates on conceptual design, development, fabrication, testing, documentation, and delivery of projects related to applied research and technology development.
Works with engineering leadership, peer engineers, and interns on assigned project tasks.
Supports administrative tasks as required for performance of research and technology development tasks, consistent with technical expertise and experience.
Occasionally interacts with stakeholders external to USF/IAE as needed under the guidance of project leadership to include: presenting technical briefings, supporting business development, and similar stakeholder activities.
Assists in writing technical documentation under the guidance of project leadership to include: status reports, requirements documents, statements of work, design documents, technical proposals, and similar documentation.
May provide technical guidance and mentoring to interns working on technical projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physical, Materials, Chemical, or Biological Sciences. Must be eligible for a TS/SCI security clearance.
PREFERRED:
