Hydrology Program Lead- Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys

Overview:

The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys seeks a self-motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented individual to provide scientific and operational leadership of the Division’s Hydrology Program. The successful candidate will help facilitate collecting, interpreting, and analyzing baseline data in a State where critical information for planning and decision-making is lacking. The position offers the exciting opportunity to collaborate closely with colleagues to support the development of the Division’s new Renewable Energy (in-river hydro) Program.   Additionally, there are opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with scientists from the Climate & Cryosphere Hazards Program and the Landslide Hazards Program and scientists from the University of Alaska. By building relationships and developing collaborations, the scientist will help the State identify and address critical hydrologic issues and facilitate investigations related to changing permafrost and geologic hazards, benefiting the lives and well-being of Alaskans. Responsibilities: 

• Establish goals, plans, and objectives as part of the scientific and operational leadership of the Hydrology Program while providing support and expertise for the newly developed Renewable Energy Program.
• Develop, plan, and conduct complex, multi-disciplinary investigations to help collect data and advance the State’s knowledge of surface and groundwater hydrology and to better understand and resolve complex hydrologic issues.
• Work collaboratively on multi-disciplinary projects with other scientists where understanding hydrologic processes is critical to solving geologic problems that benefit the safety and well-being of Alaskans.
• Apply for grants, manage administrative and scientific work, assign tasks, monitor project schedules, manage resources, and ensure projects stay on schedule and meet budget and deliverables. 
• Provide expertise for the State as a liaison with municipal, state, federal, tribal, and industry officials.

Expectations:
We are looking for an advanced-level hydrologist with education and/or experience that demonstrates the following skills and abilities.

• Demonstrated experience using computer modeling and software applications (i.e. Python, Matlab, IDL, etc) for evaluating groundwater and surface water systems.
• Demonstrated experience collecting and analyzing hydrologic data while working collaboratively to address complex multi-disciplinary scientific questions, especially where there is benefit to people and communities. Experience in cold regions hydrology is desired but not required.
• Demonstrated program and grant-funded project leadership, i.e., experience developing project ideas and funding proposals, applying for grants, and managing administrative and scientific work, including assigning tasks, monitoring staff’s project schedules, managing resources, ensuring that projects stay on schedule and budget, and meeting deliverables. 
• Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills to conduct scientific projects and communicate the results to other colleagues and the general public. 
• Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to compile, process, analyze, and manage geospatial data supporting project and agency objectives.
