Position Details | The Physical Plant team is responsible for operations and maintenance of Wesleyan buildings and grounds. The team includes a staff of skilled tradespeople who maintain and repair campus buildings and associated equipment. The physical plant team also operates the Central Power Plant, which supplies and distributes steam for heating and chilled water for air conditioning purposes. Reporting to the HVAC (Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning) Shop Working Foreperson, the HVAC Mechanic is responsible for preventive, planned and corrective maintenance and small projects in university owned properties. Work scope includes licensed and unlicensed work on building HVAC and refrigeration systems. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Physical Demands/Working Conditions include Balancing, Climbing, Carrying, Pulling/Pushing, Reaching, Repetitive Movement, Sitting, Standing, Twisting, Bending, Lifting (50-100 lbs), Climbing ladders, and working from platforms and heights as needed. This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, position in the physical plant bargaining unit. Typical work hours are Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm with 1 hour lunch break This position may be required to work frequent overtime shifts which may include returning to work between shifts, nights, holidays and weekends as directed or called. This position is classified as essential personnel. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency. |
Minimum Qualifications | High school graduate or equivalent. State of Connecticut S-2 License. EPA Refrigerant Reclamation Certification. Five years of progressively responsible experience installing and maintaining HVAC systems in institutional or heavy commercial and residential facilities. Working knowledge of residential and commercial building construction including mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Working knowledge of applicable local, state and national building codes and other regulations applicable to area of responsibility. Demonstrated knowledge and proper use of personal protective equipment related to HVAC Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets and proper waste disposal methods. Proper application of Lockout Tag out, confined space, and other safety procedures. Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and build to blueprints, drawings and specifications. Effective communication skills. Demonstrated history of satisfied customer service and customer follow-up skills. Desktop computer skills including the fundamental use of internet, e-mail and maintenance management systems. Possession and continuous maintenance of valid State of Connecticut driver’s license and safe driving skills. Ability to provide your own basic tools of the trade for a HVAC mechanic (e.g. including but not limited to service wrench, flaring tool, refrigeration gauges, screw drivers, volt/ohm meter, pliers, wrenches, hammer, sheet metal snips, etc. ) Ability to perform the responsibilities of the position listed above with or without reasonable accommodations Ability to meet the scheduling needs of the position as described above Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds. |
Preferred Qualifications | State of Connecticut S-1 license or additional relevant trade licenses. Advanced experience and/or certifications with HVAC systems, HVAC controls systems, sheet metal fabrication experience.
