About the Department
The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.
Essential Job Duties
The Lead Technician position requires a highly skilled trades person working at an advanced level, proficient in HVAC/R, electrical, plumbing/pipe fitting and general building maintenance as required within the maintenance service zone(s).
Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Team leader, technical trainer or in a supervisory role capacity in the absence of the Zone manager.
  • Assigns work orders to other employees.
  • Orders materials and performs other administrative tasks.
  • Conducts maintenance, repair, installation and operation of heating, venting, air conditioning and refrigeration systems (generally designated as HVAC/R) and the associated auxiliary equipment, controls, components and hydronic systems that would be found in a commercial, industrial or large university setting.
Other Responsibilities
  • Must participate in quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This occurs every ten to fourteen weeks.
  • Must be able to work overtime and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
 
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Must be able to safely work on extension ladders and high lifts. Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds.
  • Knowledge of local, state and national codes pertaining to the trades assigned.
  • Multi-trade experience with a concentration in HVAC, electrical, steam, plumbing and controls.
  • Computer literacy is required for this position. This would include the use of hand-held electronic devices in the field.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments.
  • Lead or team managing skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Multi-trade experience with a concentration in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
  • Supervisory or team leading experience.
  • Experience in the operation, troubleshooting and repair of building automation systems and controls.
  • Universal CFC certificate.
Required License or Certification
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
