JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The HVAC Supervisor supervises the activities of a skilled workforce including in-house and contract labor in the operation of the high-pressure boiler plants and large centrifugal chillers, advises Mechanical Services Administration concerning budget, equipment acquisition and performance, and failure analyses based on sound technical skill and empirical data. This position also assumes responsibility for personnel actions including employment, performance evaluations, training, and discipline.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans and reviews the activities of the in-house and contract workforce in the maintenance and repair of building mechanical systems/equipment.
  • Supervises all HVAC staff. 
  • Diagnosises equipment trouble, improves equipment performance, performs equipment failure analysis, chooses between maintenance and purchasing options, and sources tool equipment and supplies.
  • Monitors and maintains all DDC control systems associated with the power plants.
  • Completes employee disciplinary actions, hires and promotes employees, provides training and development of employees, and prepares work schedules.
  • Schedules annual/semi-annual inspections of all equipment.
  • Establishes safety training with campus safety officers.
  • Reviews construction documents prepared by Facilities Planning and outside architects. 
  • Ensures the university complies with regulator regulations and inspections.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  •  



    Qualifications

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

    EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. (TRANSCRIPT IS REQUIRED)

    EXPERIENCE: Six (6) years of experience in repairing building mechanical systems to include troubleshooting fluid power and pneumatic systems, drive train component problems, boilers, air conditioning systems, heating systems, and piping system installation. Two (2) years of experience operating boilers greater than 5HP or 50 ft2 and refrigeration equipment up to 1,500 tons. (Prior related supervisory experience preferred.)  

    LICENSES: Valid driver’s license; Shelby County 1st class steam operating license; Shelby County 1st class refrigeration operating license. (PROOF OF VARIOUS LICENSES)

    PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS: Must ability to lift 75 lbs.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of Archibus application and Kronos Workforce Central is a plus.
    • Skill in performing proper operation and maintenance of a power plant including high-pressure boilers and chillers over 1300 tons.
    • Ability to effectively manage the efforts of a skilled operation and maintenance workforce.
    • Ability to manage contractors and projects.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

    WORK SCHEDULE: This position is required to report to designated work locations to ensure the operation of essential campus functions or departments during an emergency, or when the University has suspended or delayed operations. May occasionally work weekends and evenings. May require overnight travel.
