Description of Work Unit
This work unit provides the services to properly operate, maintain, and repair the heating, ventilation, cooling, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration and structural building systems. These buildings include many of the technologically advanced bio safety level III containment utilized on the campus as well as clean room facilities associated with pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Position Summary
Manage the mechanical systems at the Infectious Disease Research Center – Foothills Campus, South Campus, and Painter Center – Main Campus to keep the biosafety laboratories fully operational and safe. Assure minimal outage and equipment failure by using a variety of resources available to analyze deficiencies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Three years of experience performing technical maintenance to HVAC/R systems and associated components.
  • CFC license.
Substitutions
  • An associate’s degree or successful completion of training in HVAC at an accredited college or university or recognized non-correspondence technical school may substitute for up to one year of the required experience.

  • Experience maintaining and troubleshooting HVAC/R systems in a commercial environment including knowledge of electrical, pneumatic, electronic control systems to gas and hot water heating systems, air conditioning, and ventilation systems.
  • Ability to plan and schedule outages to ensure the least amount of disruption to building occupants.
  • Customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Communication skills (verbal/written).
  • Experience and ability reading and interpreting blueprints.
  • Safety-minded work habits.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and demonstrate time management skills.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Operate, diagnose, and troubleshoot repairs reciprocating type air conditioning and refrigeration systems and components. 
  • Perform preventative maintenance, diagnose and repair pumps, cooling towers, refrigerant and water piping, walk-in refrigeration coolers and freezers, compressors, refrigerators, starters, coils, environmental chambers, ice machines, window A/C’s water coolers, and other various cooling equipment.

  • Troubleshoot, repair, modify and operate electrical, pneumatic, and electronic control systems to gas and hot water heating systems, air conditioning, and ventilation systems.

  • Perform maintenance services to components such as expansion tanks, pressure, and temperature limiting devices, heat exchangers, valves, pilot assemblies, motors, gas burners, orifices, regulators, v-belts, sheaves, and other types of heating and ventilation components.
