Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Incumbent assists the Zone Supervisor (or Superintendent) in facility renewal projects and other programs to extend the life of HVAC and related equipment. Performs work as an expert, senior mechanic. Duties of this position are quite complex and sophisticated, requiring the ability to apply highly technical knowledge and procedures to the maintenance of HVAC systems and equipment in the zone.
Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED AND Ten years progressively responsible experience in any combination of air conditioning, refrigeration, temperature control, steamfitting, stationary engineering, plumbing or heating trades. Two years of this experience must have included the supervision of journey level mechanics in these trades. (2) Non-supervisory option: Supervisory experience not required.

Preferences:
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of the HVAC trade, including air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, temperature control, plumbing, and steam fitting. Skill in the installation, repair and tools and equipment of the trade; in welding, brazing and soldering; in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematic drawings, associated technical reference manuals, specifications, and contract documents; in the use of dial indicators, Vernier calipers, and depth micrometers.  Must have specific knowledge of the practices and techniques used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC equipment and systems including DDC controls of refrigerant types, environmental impact, and refrigerant handling and reclamation procedures and equipment.  Must understand VAV systems, heat exchangers and primary and secondary pumping systems. Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations related to the HVAC trade; basic knowledge of National Electric Code; thorough knowledge of NFPA 90E regulations applicable to HVAC industry; of basic mathematics including area, volume, and weights and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.  Basic computer keyboarding skills required; must possess skill in using computers for various office applications (i.e. e-mail, MS Word, Excel); must be proficient in the use of basic hand-held electronic devices for work management applications; must be able to program computers for HVAC system operations and use computers to diagnose HVAC system problems. Ability to read and explain manufacturer recommendations regarding scheduled and preventative maintenance, servicing, and operation; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to lead and train HVAC mechanics and other maintenance personnel in the HVAC trade; and to assist supervisor in estimating costs of installing HVAC systems up to 100 tons.  
Incumbent must keep abreast of current HVAC methods and equipment; must adhere to NEC, applicable OSHA and MOSH regulations, and departmental safety procedures/practices; must also adhere to regulatory requirements such as the Clean Air Act, CFC Section 608.  Must follow and facilitate adherence to all applicable state, university, and departmental personnel policies and procedures.
Possession of a Maryland HVAC journeyman’s license desired.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Additional Certifications:
Must possess Universal CFC certification. 
Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Class C driver’s license, or equivalent, with fewer than 6 pts.

Physical Demands
Must be able to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work in confined spaces; to be exposed to extremes of temperature and weather; may be required to work at great heights and on ladders up to 35 feet. Must have the ability to stand and walk up to 8 hours per day and to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. on a regular basis, 50 pounds occasionally; must be able to manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment. Must be able to wear and work in personal protective equipment.  
The incumbent is required to wear Uniforms, Safety Footwear and other required PPE provided by the University.  
 
Work schedule is 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.
 
Position is Essential and subject to a 24-hour day, 7-day week span of operation.
 
Position is not tele-work eligible.
 
The HVAC Operations unit participates in the annual HVAC Reflex schedule, which is scheduled coverage on weekends, and holidays when the University is closed. The HVAC Reflex schedule is determined by seniority and established one year in advance.
