Psychology is a large and active department with a significant volume of research activity requiring human subjects participation. The primary duties of the HSA are to recruit participants from the university and the community for research studies, and to manage related systems and processes. The HSA will manage a participant pool for paid studies (paid pool) and a participant pool for students fulfilling course requirements (credit pool). Other duties include maintaining two separate SONA databases—one for the credit pool and another for the paid pool; updating Sona user accounts and studies; creating, publicizing, and processing of researchers’ applications for participation in the credit pool; approving studies for posting in Sona; tracking student progress; creating quarterly eligibility surveys using Qualtrics; and compiling and distributing results to participating researchers. The HSA will serve as the departmental expert and advise researchers on issues related to human subjects, IRB, SONA, CITI, etc., and will serve as the primary point of contact for other departments regarding research policies in the Psychology Department. The HSA will work directly with the IRB to ensure department policies and protocols are up to date, will advise participants on individual rights and responsibilities, and instruct researchers and participants on signing up for studies and providing additional information and support as needed. The HSA will also ensure that relevant sections of the department website reflect current and accurate information related to research participation (rights, instructions, resources, etc.), will develop and maintain resources for department researchers, and will train researchers as needed including at graduate student orientation and lab manager trainings.

This is a 75% FTE, continuing position exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Assist in designing experiments, exercising independent initiative and judgment gained from completing a variety of high level assignments, including activities such as defining variables, formulating hypotheses, and selecting subjects, sources of information, or planning and coordinating experimental protocols.
  • Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing only general guidance and suggestions.
  • Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
  • Solve problems, and make decisions which affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
  • Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
  • Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
  • Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
  • Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific theory and methods.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with human study participants.
  • Developing supervisory skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.

The expected pay range for this position is $76,000 to $92,000 per annum.
