Description of Work Unit

To educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. The Human Resources service within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) serve all non-faculty staff in addressing HR questions, concerns, evaluations, corrective actions, benefits, hiring and termination. This service supports more than 350 employees within the VTH.
Position Summary
This position serves to provide comprehensive recruiting and staffing functions in support of the overall strategic mission of Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The successful candidate will possess the ability to identify talent needs, design and implement employer branding strategies, drive the recruitment and selection processes, and establish a strong recruiting pipeline.
This position will help to streamline existing HR functions within the VTH and ensure complex programs and processes are clear. This position will also have responsibility for coordinating searches for VTH positions and utilize the applicant tracking system (TMS) to assist in the search process. This person should have an affinity for effective processes, a commitment to the candidate experience, and an ability to align skill sets with organizational needs. This position has become a fully operational professional who works independently in performing the range of HR responsibilities. This position serves as a resource to others in all aspects of Human Resources, policy, law, and applications of guidelines.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources, liberal arts, marketing, communications, or related field
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in Human Resources, Talent Management, or Recruiting as a primary responsibility or a minimum of 3 years of experience in Human Resources, Talent Management, or Recruiting as a secondary responsibility or supporting human resources by utilizing information systems to enter, verify, track, and/or approve personnel actions while ensuring record-keeping compliance.
  • A demonstrated ability to engage and effectively communicate with diverse audiences
  • Recruiting experience and interviewing skills, including the ability to actively listen, analyze answers, and ask appropriate follow-up/clarifying questions
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Previous experience using an Applicant Tracking System (PeopleAdmin, Workday, Taleo, etc.) and/or scheduling candidate interviews, posting job advertisements, and coordinating the candidate search process
  • Proven ability to be detail-minded and highly organized with experience tracking multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Proven familiarity with higher education, fundraising/outside sales, and/or large-scale non-profit organizations
  • An affinity for developing people, an ability to align skillsets with organizational needs, and an ability to inspire and motivate passive employment seekers, with a persuasive personality
  • Demonstrated ability working with Microsoft Office Suite and an aptitude for quickly learning new technology
  • The highly desired candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, personal characteristics, and experience directly related and critical to this position:
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn laws and acceptable practices concerning consumer reports, criminal background checks, and driver’s record information
  • Experience with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) database, preferably Oracle.
  • Knowledge of laws and acceptable practices in human resources records.
  • Experience entering information and moving applicants’ status within applicant tracking systems.
  • Knowledge and experience with records retention and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Organization skills, attention to detail, and able to maintain a process-focused workload
  • Able and willing to use public speaking skills to provide small-group trainings to on-campus HR partners.

Essential Duties


Job Duty Category Recruitment and Retention
Duty/Responsibility
  • This position will be responsible for recruitment efforts of all non-faculty positions for the VTH, developing creative outreach strategies to attract candidates, using social networking and marketing as well as other recruiting strategies. 
  • This position will also develop retention strategies and opportunities for all VTH employees, following up all voluntary terminations with an exit interview and, based on the feedback, integrates new strategies to improve retention.
  • Work with services for locum needs, recruiting and managing logistics of locum coverage.

Duty/Responsibility
  • This position is instrumental in creating and completing job descriptions, collaborating with requestors to finalize PDQ language and appropriately direct the request for state classified or Admin Pro. 
  • Reviews job description changes received from VTH Service Heads, Supervisors or VTH Leadership to promote or create a new position. 
  • Define whether this position is properly written, complies with state classified language and regulations, is consistent with similar positions within the VTH and define when there are differences, approve for posting, has essential requirements to post to include appropriate minimum qualifications, education and clear and complete designation of duties.

Job Duty Category Coordinating and Managing Volunteers in the VTH
Duty/Responsibility
  • Pull all volunteer opportunities for the VTH into one program. This includes service-specific volunteers (i.e. foaling season volunteers, Cardio volunteers), house-wide volunteers, student volunteers, etc.
  • Coordinate orientation, assignments and recruitment.
  •  Recruit and on-board viable volunteers. 
  • Collaborate with the Training and Compliance Coordinator to create orientation, tour and training.

Job Duty Category Back-Up for Other HR Personnel and other HR Duties As Needed
Duty/Responsibility
  • Act as team member for HR services within the VTH to partner and cover additional HR duties as required. Examples could include partnering with other HR personnel during heavy state classified annual evaluation periods to help review and process evaluations for 250 personnel, cover other HR personnel for leaves, vacation or sick. 
  • Continuing ongoing recruitment activities and retention efforts in process. 
  • Collaborate with networks to cull candidates for open positions.
