Student SHRM membership is a plus.

Intern Job Description – Talent Acquisition / Staff and Labor Relations

The Human Resources Intern will directly assist the Human Resources Talent Acquisition Specialists and/or the Staff and Labor Relations Associate Director with a wide range of projects related to HR Talent Acquisition and Staff and Labor Relations. Additional activities may include projects or shadow experience with other areas of HR, including Learning and Education, HR Communications, Quality of Work Life, Benefits, Compensation, and Human Resources Information Management.

This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills they may have acquired in school related to areas of interest and apply them in a professional setting. The intern will gain a better understanding of the role that Human Resources can play in a non-profit setting and be better prepared to work in the arena of human resources and the non-profit sector. Additionally, they will also have opportunities to network with the entire Penn HR Staff.

The Human Resources Intern will learn the practical application of these functions:

  • Talent Acquisition: The primary responsibilities will include:
    • Work with professionals in the Talent Acquisition Office conducting research to identify professionals across multiple industry and functional areas.  Research will be conducted using a combination of internet search techniques and telephone outreach.
    • Execute sourcing efforts to confirm names, titles and contact information of target candidates
    • Assist with development of our Research Database by tracking research information and contacts.
    • Review existing tracking system for quality candidates who may have not been contacted for previous opportunities.
    • Continuously report on research and sourcing efforts to members of the Staffing and Talent Acquisition team.
    • Research relevant articles and stay abreast of trends in the recruiting and job search space.
    • Additional talent acquisition activities may include review of the steps in the recruiting and hiring process, including posting job openings, reviewing resumes, conducting telephone and in-person interviews, making job offers and negotiating starting salaries.
    • Attend training seminars and workshops as available, as well as any on-sight or off-sight Job Fairs.
    • Additional activities may include projects or shadow experience with Staff Relations, Learning and Education, HR Communications, Quality of Work Life, Benefits, Compensation, Human Resources Information Management

  • Staff and Labor Relations: The primary responsibilities will include:
    • Assist with negotiation preparation, including researching language, organizing notes and files, and researching data.
    • During negotiations, take notes of record, maintain negotiations records, files, and proposals for both sides in an orderly manner.
    • Prepare the contract book as language is agreed upon.
    • Attend meetings, grievance hearings, and shadow as appropriate to gain exposure to labor and staff relations issues.
    • Observe discussions on employee relations issues to gain an understanding of how laws and policies are applied to various situations.
    • Attend training seminars and workshops as available.

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in Human Resources as a rising junior or rising senior.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle numerous assignments simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and internet applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal, research, and time management skills.
  • Grace under pressure and good judgment in sensitive situations.
  • Student Member of SHRM a plus
  • A resume and cover letter are required for the position. 

Salary: $17.00/hour

Time: 9:00 – 5:00 p.m., one hour lunch

Schedule: Monday through Thursday onsite

Hours worked: 7 hours per day, total 28 hours per week

Dates of Internship: June 3, 2024 - August 8, 2024

Reports to: Human Resources Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist/Senior Staff & Labor Relations Specialist.
