About the Department
Benefits, Employee Wellness and Work Life provides strategic consultation for prospective and current employees, as well as pending retirees, for benefits and retirement planning while administering several pre-tax and post-tax benefit plans. 
The unit’s Consultants ‘Build a Thriving Pack’ assisting faculty and staff via their work with colleges and divisions in achieving healthy lifestyle goals that address NC State’s six elements of Wellness. Benefits, Employee Wellness and Work Life provides programs and services to help employees maintain a positive work life balance including leave, recognition, perks and childcare programs.
Essential Job Duties
The HR Benefits Consultant has a high level of accountability and strategic responsibility, performing processes associated with benefits administration and handling cases requiring seasoned expertise and in-depth knowledge. Serves as the subject matter expert for enrollments, qualified life events, Affordable Care Act, retirement processing along with leading one of the benefits programs like Benefits Orientation, Phased Retirement, ACA and other programs.
The responsibilities of this Consultant include but are not limited to:
Benefits Administration 
  • Administer Health & Welfare programs and retirement plans (401(k)/403(b)/457(b)), TSERS and ORP.
  • Review and process Qualifying Life Event enrollments.
  • Process 401(k)/403(b)/457(b) contributions/loans enrollment/change requests.
  • Customer Oriented 
  • Maintain professionalism and diplomacy when dealing with frustrated employees and sensitive situations.
  • Understand and address customer needs through active listening and idea development.
  • Follow through on commitments and maintain communication with customers.

Compliance and Accountability 
  • Complete work within established deadlines, maintaining productivity.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ensure adherence to policies, procedures, and legal regulations related to retirement plans, benefits, and workplace conduct.

Training/Resource Development
  • Acquire knowledge of NCSU, System Office, and State processes for benefits and leave management.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on employee-related issues regarding retirement, transfers, enrollments, and Qualifying Life Events.
  • Cross-train in various areas of benefits/leave management to enhance overall support capabilities.
  • Lead one or various benefits programs such as Benefits Orientation, PostDoc Orientation, ACA, or Phased Retirement Program.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and two years of progressively responsible professional human resources management experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated progressive experience in benefits and/or pension administration.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS Systems, including analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Thorough understanding of IRS code, DOL rules, and North Carolina State regulations.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively and support customers across various organizational tiers.
  • Capacity to handle multiple tasks and see projects through to completion.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Basic understanding and interpretation skills for multiple plan documents, policies, procedures, legal requirements, and retirement regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven professional experience in Benefits Administration, Human Resources, Employee Relations, or Leave Administration
  • Proficiency with an automated HR information system.
  • Experience in a large company/college setting (3000+ employees)
  • Bilingualism is advantageous
  • Preference for PHR/SPHR, CEBS, or CBP certification
