Our laboratory combines computational and experimental methods to investigate human-associated microbes. We use translational approaches integrating shotgun metagenomics and microbial genomics with microbiology to explore the relevance of microbes in human health and diseases. Examples of our work include Tirosh, Nature Medicine 2018; Byrd, Science Translational Medicine 2017; Oh, Byrd, Cell 2016; and Oh, Nature 2014. Our current research investigates human microbiota in relation to antibiotic resistance and primary immunodeficiency syndromes to understand how the host shapes our microbiota and vice versa.

A postdoctoral position in human microbiome research is available in Dr. Heidi Kong’s group in the Dermatology Branch, NIAMS, NIH. The group collaborates extensively with genomicists, immunologists, and clinical teams to perform cutting-edge human microbiome research.

We are looking for highly motivated scientists with:

• a PhD or MD with receipt of the last graduate degree within the past 5 years;
• a strong background in molecular biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, and/or immunology, documented by peer-reviewed publications;
• strong oral and written communications skills; and
• ability to work well both independently and with others on a team.
