Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two HSJI RA positions for Pre-College Programs at Oregon State University (OSU).
The High School Journalism Institute (HSJI) is a collaboration between Oregon State University, The Oregonian/OregonLive and Oregon media organizations. It is a one-week summer camp for high school students from Oregon and SW Washington to work with professional mentors to use real journalism skills to report and photograph a 36-page newspaper, as well as blog and produce multimedia pieces. 
The HSJI resident assistants provide support during the day directing students to various campus locations, drive students to their interviews around Corvallis and stay overnight in the residence halls providing supervision. HSJI RAs also provide information about OSU and what it is like to be a college student.
Position Duties
Responsibilities
  • Resident Assistants will work through the annual High School Journalism Institute, July 20 through July 27.
  • Live in the residence hall with high school students throughout their seven-night stay at the camp. Males and females will be in separate suites.
  • Walk with students to and from residence halls. Accompany students as they walk in a group to meal times in dining halls, to and from the Student Experience Center, and to other activities throughout the week. It is essential that RAs must arrive at set location at least 10 minutes early to ensure students stay on schedule.
  • During periods between designated times with students, one RA will be within 5-minute walking distance of the Student Experience Center and available for phone calls in case of questions or needs that may arise. RA’s may coordinate with camp organizers ahead of camp to determine who will fulfill this role at any given time.
  • Follow all instructions from OSU lead organizer, Orange Media Network staff and The Oregonian institute lead organizer regarding rules and schedule.
  • Maintain utmost professionalism at all times, including on social media
  • Ensure students are following all rules and expectations set by High School Journalism Institute staff, Orange Media Network, and Oregon State University.
  • Keep students on the OSU campus at all times. Make sure students do not leave campus for any reason.
  • Any trips to on-campus stores, shops, or restaurants are only done with prior approval by the High School Journalism Institute co-organizers.
  • Provide group-bonding activities for students during free-time. Activities should be constructive and inclusive of all students
  • Report all problems, concerns, or emergencies immediately to Susan Rowe, coordinator or staff of High School Journalism Institute
  • Maintain professional relationship with students
  • A minimum of one male RA and one female RA will be hired
  • Must be available in the evenings to stay overnight in the residence hall with 20 high school students.
  • Must conduct a walk through each night and a wake-up each morning to ensure all students are accounted for.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Must be available for work July 20 to July 27, 2024
  • Must be a current, fee-paying OSU student
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive a 12-passenger van
  • If hired, must participate in pre-institute training for youth safety and pass the 12-passenger van test

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a Resident Assistant
  • Previous experience participating in High School Journalism Institute as a student or RA, or previous experience in student media or journalism study
  • CPR/First Aid Certified
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • HSJI RAs receive $725 for the week plus room and board provided during week.
