Position Summary

The Vue Lab (Tou Yia Vue, PhD; [email protected]) in the Department of Neurosciences at the UNM Health Sciences Center seeks a highly motivated individual for a Health Sciences Research Tech 1 position to join our research group studying the genetic mechanisms of brain and spinal cord development, brain cancer development, and the impact of alcohol exposure on brain development, focusing specifically on the function of glial cells under normal and pathological conditions.

Funding is available through 06/30/2025; continuance beyond that date is subject to the Department's operational needs as outlined in UBPPM #3200, Employee Classifications, click here.

Currently, the position offers research opportunities to work closely with principal investigator and graduate students in the lab to design and perform exciting experiments to learn mouse genetics, harvesting mouse brain and spinal cord tissues for cryosectioning, immunostaining, and imaging using highly sophisticated confocal microscopes in the UNM Fluorescence Microscopy & Cell Imaging Core. Talented and productive research technician will also have the opportunity to present research findings at both local (UNM/New Mexico) and/or national research conferences, and serve as co-authors on manuscripts published from the lab. These opportunities are invaluable training experiences ideal for future careers in biomedical research whether in industries or in academia/medicine as PhD or MD candidates.

Additional duties for Research Tech 1 position include helping to breed and maintain a mouse colony, isolating genomic tail DNA from mice to be used for genotyping, and managing and stocking laboratory research supplies and reagents. This position also performs a variety of routine technical tasks associated with the execution of health sciences laboratory, clinical, and/or field research protocol. These include collecting, processing, and coordinating a range of data, samples, and/or specimens, under established protocol regarding method, process, and technique.

Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of directly related student practicum or equivalent experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

·         B.S. in Biology, Neuroscience, Genetics or related fields

·         Prior coursework in neuroscience, genetics, chemistry and math

·         Highly motivated and organized, excellent record-keeping

·         Possess lab research experience

·     Knowledgeable in fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, and image analysis using ImageJ, Illustrator, and/or Photoshop.

·         Able to work occasionally on weekends as lab needs dictate.
