BYU's Office of Information Technology (OIT) is passionate about supporting thousands of students, faculty, and staff on our campus community every day. We are committed to growth, whether that is through offering employee training to build skills, providing students with invaluable hands-on work experiences, or providing an environment where spiritual growth is encouraged.  We care about our employees maintaining a great work-life balance, so we provide flexibility with scheduling and remote work when possible. OIT has a fun, positive, caring environment that emphasizes collaboration, commitment, and customer service. Our goal is to offer excellent service to the University while striving to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life.

Job Summary

OITHR (the HR team supporting OIT) needs an HR Specialist to fill a unique and important role in the Office of IT's HR group. In this position, you will find you are given trust and a high level of autonomy as you and your team accomplish several critical HR operational processes.

This position can offer learning and growth, too.  While the initial assignment will be focused on certain specific functions, there is an opportunity for learning in many functional areas of HR as the needs arise to distribute the work across the team.

If you want to work less than 40 hours a week, this part-time position (28 hours a week) may provide just the flexibility you need for work-life balance.

You will be a key member of a team that supports the Office of Information Technology at BYU.  OIT is a division of approximately 850 employees who further the BYU mission by providing technology solutions of all kinds to the BYU University and Church Education System.  It is fascinating and meaningful work.  In this job, you will lead a team of student employees who assist with daily HR tasks.  You have the opportunity to help them with experiential learning and mentorship.

As the HR Specialist in OIT, you will perform a variety of specific HR and administrative functions. The position we want to fill will focus on the following functions, although this position could be allowed to learn and develop skills in many other HR and business functions, too.

So . . . what would this position be doing?  You and your team will be initially assigned to work on the following areas (although this is not a comprehensive list):

Recruiting/Talent Acquisition

  • You and your team will be responsible for all functions related to determining/tracking what jobs need to be filled, defining jobs, creating postings, helping managers with applicant reviews and interviews, selection processes, and applicant communications.
  • You will also be responsible for advertising positions, maintaining a careers website, and promoting OIT as a hiring organization (brand marketing).

Employee Talent Management, Career Development, Job Definition, and Promotion Processing

  • As employees come and go and responsibilities change, this position helps with the transitions, job development, and growth opportunities.
  • This position also helps with defining career progression grids and job descriptions and is responsible for the processes related to job definitions and promotions.

HR Communication & Process Documentation

  • With 850 employees, there is a lot for managers to learn related to all the aspects of recruiting and talent management.  This position is responsible for documenting processes, training, and communicating with managers to help them with this function.
  • This position is also responsible for a lot of communication with other departments on campus that help us post and fill positions.
