General Description of the Job Class

This position will work very closely with assigned Duke Health Technology Solutions (DHTS) groups as an HR Business Partner, crafting strategies and proactively developing plans to ensure goals are reached. The HRBP will work collaboratively with the DHTS HR team on providing "best in class" Human Resources. The role will demand a proactive approach and an outcomes-based philosophy.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Partners with leadership to design, develop and execute effective HR strategies and best practices that enable the team to maintain excellence in delivery and quality of service while ensuring alignment with DHTS and health system policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Engages his/her assigned leadership team members in problem-solving approaches that encourage their development in examining options and arriving at collaborative solutions that balance the needs of assigned teams and the organization. 
  • Participates in developing strategies that directly support the goals of assigned departments. Cultivates and promotes effective working relationships with internal leaders and partners; orchestrates buy-in and support of stakeholders as new programs and program changes are implemented.
  • Provides advice and recommendations on HR best-practices for the advancement of DHTS or health system objectives. Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge with a focus on emerging practices in IT healthcare, new tools, and trends.
  • Analyzes key departmental metrics including turnover, recruitment, and employee engagement to identify trends, activities, and potential issues within assigned departments.  Applies to understand of the business unit to strategize action plans and partner with managers/directors/VPs to implement and deliver key goals and objectives.
  • Supports the reward and recognition activities implemented at DHTS for its employees.
  • Participates in the implementation of the Employee Engagement tool, as needed, and in collaboration with his/her assigned departments and members of the HR team assists in the development of strategies to enhance workplace culture.
  • Applies an understanding of key legal precedents, policies, and practices to protect the interests of DUHS, DHTS, and individual employees.  Monitors internal and external changes in the law to define and confront risk to employees and the department and the organization. 
  • Attends his/her assigned departmental meetings, HR meetings, and other meetings as assigned by the CHRO.
  • Partners with other HR professionals within DHTS and DUHS.
  • Leads “special projects” as assigned by the CHRO.

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum of three years’ Human Resources experience at the generalist or business partner level
  • Experience in performance management, employment law, employee relations, and compensation and workforce planning.
  • Experience in business consultation, performance improvement, problem-solving, and strategic/proactive thinking.
  • Exhibits skills in relationship management, negotiation, persuasion, and conflict resolution.
  • Exhibit strong project management and change management skills.
  • An ability to develop and implement complex projects from inception to completion, analyze data, trends, and develop and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Experience in a health care environment of similar size and complexity is preferred.
  • Demonstrates intellect and analytical capability; able to dissect issues and engineer solutions while also demonstrating sound judgment, intuition, and emotional intelligence.

Required Qualifications at this Level


Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.


Work requires three years of business and/or administrative experience, with exposure to human resources activities, to acquire knowledge of human resources policies and procedures necessary to manage the personnel activities of a department or division.
