Position Summary
Under general supervision and technical guidance, the person in this position is responsible for implementation and engineering support for technology solutions such as high-performance computing, server virtualization, and other research computing solutions. This includes supporting researchers in the areas of simple scripting, software applications, data management, and security compliance. The position will work with a team of technical staff within the Engineering IT organization, staff within WUIT, and proactively engage with the Engineering research community to support the research mission of the McKelvey School of Engineering. It also provides oversight of the daily systems operation that supports the Engineering School’s IT computational systems and resources.


Job Description

Office environment. Will need to be able to travel to on-campus and off-campus locations for meetings as needed. Will participate in on call rotations and will occasionally require working evenings and weekends. There will be occasional lifting and installation of equipment (40-60 pounds) as well as running of cabling that may require standing on a stepstool or ladder.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Proactively engages with the Engineering research community to provide technical support and basic training on advancing their research with computing services, advising on data workflows and application performance.
  • Supports researchers and students on moderately complex existing University operating systems, software installation/maintenance, and hardware to ensure research project success.   
  • Triage and respond to user questions and service desk requests for issues with software, HPC resources, or other EIT services.
  • Create and maintain documentation related to services, solutions, and interfaces.
  • Provide technical and advisory leadership as required to complete objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus 3+ years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Minimum of two years of Linux administration experience.
  • Experience working in higher education, especially research institutions utilizing HPC. 
  • Experience in enterprise-scale environments. 
  • Experience with systems analysis techniques and procedures and developing functional specifications.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix, services such as Apache, MySQL/MariaDB, HPC concepts, including job scheduling, networking, storage, containerization, as well as enterprise-level technologies such as VMWare, Active Directory. 
  • Knowledge of programming concepts and experience with common scripting languages, such as Bash or Powershell, and programmatic languages such as C, Python. 
  • High aptitude for learning new technologies, demonstrated aptitude to quickly and effectively adapt to technologies outside of current experience.
  • Ability to consult with clients and higher-level technicians and analysts to resolve technical problems and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Effective oral and written presentation skills.
  • Ability to adjust to changes in priorities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new circumstances.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Must be flexible and willing to work extended hours as necessary and recognize the need to do so.
  • Ability to adjust scheduled time.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment and demonstrate a proactive approach to problem solving.


Required Qualifications

Associate degree and four years of related experience or bachelor's degree and two years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience to equal s years.

Salary Range
$63,900.00 - $109,100.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
