Job Description Summary:
A student employee must be enrolled in KUMC and actively attending classes, except when summer classes are not taken in a degree seeking program. The student will be employed in an area of KUMC as a temporary employee. The student will be assigned duties by the employing area that will be consistent with the work done the area. The student will be assigned an immediate supervisor from whom the student employee should receive work direction and work assignments. Other relevant duties as requested by the supervisor or other appropriate personnel in the area may be assigned.
The Dementia Care hourly student research assistant will work as part of an interdisciplinary team on an NIH-funded pragmatic clinical trial testing online communication training for nursing home staff in 128 communities nationwide. Duties will include assisting with recruitment and retention of nursing home staff participants, preparing reports and dissemination materials, reviewing literature for relevant research, and participating in data cleaning and analyses. The hourly student research assistant will attend and participate in research team virtual meetings. Additional opportunities may include analysis of data collected from dementia family caregivers as part of the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s disease research center, and behavioral coding for secondary data analyses.
The hourly student research assistant will have opportunities to participate as part of the multi-site research team and dissemination activities (presentation at local and regional conferences and publication co-authorship). For spring 2024, a PhD student will receive an hourly wage of $35/hour for approximately 4-10 hours weekly.  For summer semester 2024 and ongoing, this student will be eligible for a separate GRA position with up to 50% FTE effort with commensurate levels of pay and benefits (including tuition reimbursement). Some students may be able to use research experience for academic credit.  Position may continue for additional semesters.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing, gerontology, communication studies or related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Graduate education in nursing or a related health profession.

Work Experience:

  • Prior experience on a research team.
  • Prior experience in care of persons with dementia and/or their family caregivers.
  • Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills.

Skills:

  • Demonstrate strong communication skills.
  • Ability relay information to a scientific audience.
  • Ability to independently plan, multi-task and complete projects.
  • Commitment to improving care for older adults.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
