Under general direction of the division administrator, the incumbent will work as a Hospital Medical Transcriber for a Resident Physician within the Department of Psychiatry. Main duties are to act as a medical scribe and take notes while the resident is interviewing patients and gathering clinical information from other sources (e.g. family members). Other duties include facilitating access to work areas (e.g. opening doors), assisting with office work and clerical activities (e.g. printing documents, making copies) as needed and consistently providing quality customer service. Assist with other duties as required.

  • Graduation from High School or a General Education Diploma.

  • Two years of hospital clerical experience, one of which must be medical transcription; or one year of recognized business training as a Medical Transcriber with one year of experience in Medical transcription; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Ability to accurately type.

  • Demonstrated computer experience.

  • Proven excellent oral and written communication skills, paying close attention to detail, spelling and grammar. Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas and recommendations.

  • Experience in health care settings.

  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretionary practices. Must have excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy and flexibility.

  • Must have flexibility to adjust work schedule to accommodate job needs.

  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize work, organize time efficiently, meet deadlines, and track work from initiation to completion.

  • Ability to work as a team member.

  • Knowledge of general medical terminology; solid keyboarding skills. Demonstrated ability to accurately produce documents and ensure correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Demonstrated administrative skills with the ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to listen and decipher multiple voices, accents and dictation styles and transcribe within format standards.

  • Ability to effectively utilize transcription and word processing equipment. Sufficient knowledge to generally inspect equipment and software to identify the cause of errors or other problems.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to work rotating shift schedule across various hours (that may include holidays, weekends, days, evenings, nights, and overtime) and across various training sites and medical centers within the UCSD Healthcare System, including East Campus, Hillcrest, Jacobs, outpatient offices, as well as at partnering sites such as the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Rady's Children’s Hospital. Work locations and hours are based on business needs. Must have own mode of transportation to various locations.

  • Annual TB test, flu vaccination and background check required to be in accordance with Rady Children’s Hospital health requirements.


Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $62,410 - $77,548 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $29.89 - $37.14

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
