Job Summary

Ward 86, a renowned HIV Primary Care Clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, is actively seeking a compassionate and highly motivated individual to join our team as a Hospital Assistant. In this impactful role, you will have the opportunity to provide exceptional care and support to a diverse patient population, making a meaningful difference in their lives. Under the supervision of the Practice Manager and in collaboration with our wonderful team of medical providers, nurses, and other health care professionals, you will play a crucial role in delivering care to patients at Ward 86 and affiliated clinical programs. Collaborating closely with clinical team members, you will actively contribute to the care of individuals living with HIV, people experiencing homelessness, people who use substances, and individuals with high psychosocial complexity.

As a Hospital Assistant, you will optimize clinic flow and contribute to creating a patient-centered environment that addresses the unique needs of our diverse patient population. Your responsibilities will encompass both clinical and clerical duties, ensuring optimal care outcomes and supporting various functions across clinical programs. Working within a public health setting, you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of individuals from different backgrounds, providing them with inclusive and comprehensive care. Your role on the care team will be instrumental, encompassing a range of tasks such as conducting patient vitalization, blood and specimen collection and processing, performing health screenings, obtaining patient demographic information, assisting with patient flow, maintaining exam rooms, checking equipment for proper functioning, administering vaccinations, conducting inventory checks, and maintaining accurate records. Additionally, you may be involved in transporting patients and specimens between different areas on the ZSFG Campus.

Department Description

The Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at UCSF is an internationally recognized global leader in clinical care, research and education. With its home-base located at ZSFG, the Division has been ranked as the top facility in the country for AIDS care for over ten years. The Division’s work is featured frequently in the media, and it is often visited by international, national, state and local dignitaries and delegations. The Division consists of approximately 36 faculty members and 140 academic and staff employees. It is the largest Division of the Department of Medicine at ZSFG, with a total expenditure budget of approximately $45 million dollars.


Required Qualifications

  • Active and verifiable California Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT-1)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtaining BLS Certification within 3 months of hire
  • High School graduation and three years of appropriate experience, including one year of supervisory experience where applicable; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Excellent Phlebotomy skills
  • Must be well organized and detail oriented. Able to set priorities and follow through on assigned tasks
  • Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to job responsibilities
  • Basic mathematical / computational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a busy team-oriented environment
  • Ability to push/pull 50lbs or greater while performing patient transport (wheelchair) within ZSFG Campus

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years+ of experience working as a Medical Assistant
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program  
  • Prior experience working in a primary care setting
  • Experience working with patients living with HIV/AIDS
  • Fluency in Spanish, ability to speak and communicate effectively with mono-lingual patients
  • Familiar with electronic health record systems, Microsoft Word, and Excel

License/Certification

  • Active and verifiable California Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT-1)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtaining BLS Certification within 3 months of hire
