Position: Horticulture Technician
JOB SUMMARY:
This is a12 month full-time position with the title of Horticulture Technician. The position is to work with the Horticulture Education and Research Center (HERC). LU-SL/SAAS Research Programs focus is to develop research activities that are pertinent to LU Land-Grant mission and provide best food and agricultural practices, and innovations to produce and improve access to healthy food and sustainable cultural practices.
The Horticulture Technician is expected to fully support the respective research program and other related tasks as assigned by the program supervisors. The technician will also participate in other tasks outside of the Plants and Resource Sustainability program as circumstances require to assist the LU-SL/SAAS researchers in completing project activities.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Support Horticulture and Agronomic research and extension activities.
Duties may include: Tractor tilling, manual or machine planting and transplanting, fertilizer application, mulching, crop covering, weeding, pruning, irrigation, spraying, harvesting and cleaning crops and other related farm work.
Assist with research, extension and outreach conferences, field days, and events as part of grant activities.
Execute organized growing and climate smart activities as directed by project PD, the supervisor and/or experts with a focus of teaching the public on the best production practices and innovations.
Operates tools, machinery, and equipment common to farming operations safely and correct1y (training will be provided.
Inspection of all research plots for existing and potential production problems and reporting to the PD or supervisors.
Assist student interns and part-time workers to learn gardening and equipment operation protocols.
Implement organized and effective demonstration gardens at partners/collaborators sites in urban and rural Oklahoma.
Attend weekly team meetings.
Other responsibilities as directed by the PD, Farm Manager and Program Supervisor.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Qualifications:
Associate degree
Proficient with MS Office Suite and able to write and compose reports.
Able to drive a pickup truck and have a clean driving record.
Basic background in gardening, farming, and/or horticulture.
Must be able to lift up to 30-40 pounds and be able to work in all weather conditions.
Needed skills:
Highly organized and flexible.
Although this is a 12 month position, must be available during the peak growing season of March-September, with the exception of vacation time.
Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse, multicultural environment
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software
Able to operate (or willing to learn to operate) tools, machinery, and equipment common to farming operations.
