Organizational Unit Overview
Facilities Services is a unit in Campus Operations Division, which is a part of a broad, diverse division of Administration and Finance that includes all aspects of facilities management at East Carolina University. East Carolina University is the third largest university in the University of North Carolina system with approximately 28,000 FTS and a staff of over 6,000. The university is comprised of more than 7 million square feet of facilities located on approximately 1400 acres with physical assets in excess of $1.5 billion. This includes the Main, Health Sciences, and West Research Campuses, and satellite locations throughout North Carolina associated with university programs. Facilities Services has an annual budget in excess of $30 million and employs approximately 500 FTE. Major functions include facilities maintenance and housekeeping services.
Facilities Services primary purpose is to plan and perform corrective and preventive maintenance functions on all building structures and equipment and utility infrastructure. Corrective maintenance returns equipment to optimal design performance after failure or upon degradation from age, adverse operation conditions, etc. Preventive maintenance minimizes equipment failures and reduces corrective maintenance.
Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the management of the grounds services unit at the Health Science Campus and guide the employees in the proper maintenance of trees, shrubs, perennials, and turf in a sustainable manner. When the grounds supervisor is away from the office, this position assumes managing responsibility over the entire crew of ten grounds workers. This position is required to be on-call every fourth week and respond to grounds related emergencies for the entire campus. Other duties of this position are: lawn, shrub, tree and native vegetation maintenance, schedule and organize the work required on site; plan, order, receive and inventory supplies/materials; coordinate with other facilities employees, contractors, academic departments, students, staff and faculty; assist in budgeting for future year expenses; be a resource for the department in regards to grounds services (to include landscape, irrigation, plant material, turf, storm sewer, roads, walks, drives, recycling, refuse removal and moving services) ; basic maintenance and operation of grounds equipment/vehicles; storm response; debris/garbage removal; and pest management.
Minimum Education/Experience
High school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires North Carolina Pesticide License and North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation
North Carolina Pesticide License and North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License are required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire and must be maintained.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Two years of experience with a professional landscaping firm, nursery, or a medium-to-large grounds maintenance operation is preferred. Experience in operating grounds-related equipment including, but not limited to, riding lawn mowers, backhoes, forklifts, skid steers, etc. is preferred. Candidate should be able to perform strenuous manual labor in all weather conditions.A pesticide license is preferred.
License or Certification required by the Department
North Carolina Pesticide License and North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License are required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire and must be maintained.
