Description of Work Unit

The University Honors Program (UHP) encompasses approximately 2,000 students from all eight colleges who participate in Honors courses and activities each semester. Honors students benefit from small, discussion-based seminars taught by some of the University’s finest faculty members, personalized academic advising, priority enrollment, opportunities for leadership, research and community service, and special scholarships. The Honors Program has six full-time staff including an assistant director, coordinators, assistants, as well as student assistants. The Faculty Honors Council serves as the faculty and student advisory board to the Director.

Position Summary
The Honors Advisor is a full-time, twelve-month, Administrative Professional position dedicated to serving University Honors Program students. The Honors Advisor plays a supportive role in strengthening efforts to provide quality advising and promote University Honors Program student success. This position supports an innovative and holistic approach to providing students with the assistance, guidance, and resources necessary to be successful. The primary functions of the Honors Advisor are to foster a successful transition to the university and for students in their initial semester, promote exploration of majors to ensure students’ choice of appropriate major, and use action plans to promote timely persistence and graduation.
Required Job Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Human Development and Family Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Student Affairs, or related field;
● Two years of experience in higher education academic setting;
● Experience working with historically underrepresented students such as ethnically/racially diverse students, first generation students, and international students;
● Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Job Qualifications
● Previous experience in student advising;
● Experience working with Honors students and/or academically motivated students;
● Understanding and knowledge of higher education philosophy and practices (particularly Land Grant);
● Demonstrated experience in building community in student populations;
● Knowledge of higher education technology systems (preferably Banner, Slate, and Navigate);
● Ability to work collaboratively with multiple programs and resources;
● Understanding, passion, and strength in working with people from diverse/cultural backgrounds (including international);
● Strong customer-service skills, and ability to successfully work with multiple constituents including students, parents, faculty, and staff;
● Proficiency in MS Office Suite;
● Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Interdisciplinary Studies, Student Affairs, or related field.

Essential Duties


Job Duty Category Advising and Program Assessment
Duty/Responsibility
● Advise current Track 2 students, with a smaller caseload of Track 1 students
● Assist current students and prospective students to understand the program curriculum, transfer previously earned credits, and develop an academic plan.
● Develop familiarity with issues certain populations of students may face (non-traditional students, students of color, first-generation college students, non-stem) and incorporate this perspective into developmental advising approaches.
● Provide support and comprehensive advising for students going through transitions, degree selection, and progress to graduation.
● Provide proactive outreach and tracking.
● Provide attention to students struggling to adjust to the demands of the Honors program.
● Work with FERPA Guidelines to uphold students’ privacy.
● Assist senior academic coordinator with Ram Orientation activities
● Treat each student as an individual, understanding that each student’s path to degree attainment may be different.
● Assist students on academic probation to improve GPA and overcome academic difficulties.
● Process documents related to graduation, overrides, exceptions, appeals, and other advising-related issues.

Job Duty Category Track 2 Coordination, Retention, and Recruitment
Duty/Responsibility
● Develop and implement community-building activities for Track 2 students
● Recruit transfer and continuing students to Track 2 program by collaborating with Admissions and university programs and departments, including setting up partnerships with campus programs that work with marginalized student populations.
● Work with prospective Track 2 students
● Coordinate applications for Track 2
● Participate in the development and implementation of a comprehensive assessment plan for recruitment and retention for Track 2 students.
● Schedule benchmarks for the student to successfully master program concepts, knowledge, and skills. Benchmarks for educational goals.
● Assists students with goal clarification, developing an academic completion plan for each semester, and interpreting college policies and procedures.
● Contact students regularly to discuss goal setting and enhancing time management, study skills, self-advocacy, academic success strategies, available campus support resources, and broader topics holistically impacting the student (e.g., financial concerns, caregiving responsibilities, and learning what questions to ask to allow the student to successfully learn to navigate a university system)
● Gather and compile enrollment data and other metrics to assist with measurement and analysis of current programs, services, and/or curriculums.
● Maintain tracking systems of student contact and classifications for reporting, analysis and recommendation purposes: Enrollment tracking, Academic progress (grades), drops, withdrawals, and matriculation status.
● Participate in the assessment of advising services.
● Utilize information provided by other assessments to best meet individual student needs.

● Actively participate in the Academic Support Coordinator Network, including sharing of best practices.

● Actively pursue professional development and training opportunities to remain aware of trends in student success and advising theory and practice, and participate in team training and activities;
● Explore opportunities to create process improvements while maintaining excellent customer service, the integrity of data, and work standards for the academic advising team.
● Present at conferences and/or workshops as appropriate.
