Position Summary:

Guided by our Catholic, Marianist identity as a University for the Common Good, Academic Advisors provide mission-centric academic advising by assisting students in creating an educational plan designed to foster academic achievement, in navigating their academic, social and wellness journeys while fostering belonging, enhancing agency and engagement inside and outside the classroom, and by encouraging the identification and pursuit of vocational goals. The successful candidate for this position will join a team of seven academic advisors, along with the Center Manager, the Assistant Dean, and the Sr. Administrative Assistant, in the Mittlestaedt Center for Academic Advising and Business Student Success in the School of Business Administration.

Primary Job Functions:

● Provide academic advising to a caseload of students
● Serve as primary contact and liaison for students to navigate campus policies, processes, and involvement
● Serve as primary contact with incoming students beginning with confirmation of enrollment of each term including orientation and Welcome Weekend
● Teach and/or Engage with first-year advisees in one to three sections of BIZ 101 Welcome to UD and Dayton Business offered in the fall and BIZ 103 Develop Your Vocation and Career Flight Plan offered in the spring
● Engage with prospective students and their families in collaboration with strategic recruitment and admission
● Advise students concerning an appropriate academic schedule, choice of major, number of hours that may be taken, applicable policies on probation and suspension, prerequisites for admission to majors, and alternative pathways to desired careers
● Provide holistic strategies and techniques to promote student success, a sense of belonging, student agency, and navigation of institutional policies and procedures
● Utilize Student Success Network (Starfish by EAB) to follow University student success and advising policies and procedures
● Collaborate systematically with key campus partners to connect students to appropriate resources

Minimum Qualifications:

● Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
● Strong interpersonal skills
● Strong communication skills
● Ability to maintain discretion and maintain confidentiality of sensitive student information
● Ability to collaborate across organizations
● Ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff
● Ability to effectively use basic office technology such as Microsoft Office Suite
● Experience advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and engaging in equity-minded practices
● Ability to work some nights and weekends

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

● At least 1 year working with college-aged students (all post-undergraduate experience is considered; HS work with Juniors and Seniors will be considered) - or - field experience depending on academic discipline
● Completion of Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, business, or similar disciplines
● Experience with Starfish by Hobson’s, Banner, DegreeWorks or equivalent systems
● Ability to communicate knowledge of current student development best practices
● Ability to communicate knowledge of current academic advising best practices
● Ability to deliver equitable and culturally appropriate holistic student support
● Ability to communicate knowledge of Appreciative Advising basics
● Ability to demonstrate a commitment to the distinctive characteristics of Marianist universities
