This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite in Hillcrest and remote.

Under limited supervision, the incumbent will perform phlebotomy to collect blood samples and collect urine, stool and saliva from adult participants in several research projects focusing on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), cannabis use, and cognitive impairment at the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Programs (HNRP)/Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR) within the Department of Psychiatry. Follow and develop protocols for a number of research studies with different specimen collection and processing requirements. Coordinate daily schedule with different departments and how this will impact each departments’ planned assessments. Work with the nuances and reconciliation of billing and coordinate with fund managers. Maintain accurate collection records, label and inventory samples, transfer blood, plasma, CSF and other sample types using equipment such as pipettes, process samples using a centrifuge, perform and read point of care tests, prepare samples for storage, shipment and transport to various reference labs and collaborating institutions, review and upload lab results to central database. Monitor and maintain the inventory of necessary lab supplies by placing monthly orders; operate and maintaining laboratory equipment; assist in monitoring freezer temperatures, responding to abnormal temperature fluctuations, and maintaining the freezer repository. Maintain high standards of laboratory hygiene and practice universal precautions in handling human specimens. Assemble participant files, uploading of data into central database, and help prepare other research documentation as necessary. Meet with and communicate lab findings with leadership and investigators. Attend regular meetings with department which includes presenting to the team on relevant topics. The incumbent will follow standard infection control procedures and safety policies and take universal precautionary measures.

  • Theoretical knowledge as typically acquired by a Bachelor's degree in public health, psychology or similar field.

  • Must be a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).

  • Must possess CPR/BLS Healthcare Provider Certification (recognized by AHA or equivalent).

  • Must possess a valid California driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Phlebotomy training, certification, and experience, with demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture/phlebotomy on patients with difficult venous accessibility.

  • Proven ability to interact constructively with diverse research participant population.

  • Proven ability to explain project procedures to apprehensive participants and to ensure their tranquility during the blood drawing process.

  • Proven ability to comply with confidentiality and human subjects requirements in the context of medical/public health research.

  • Proven ability to attend to detail and excellent organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated experience working independently and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of (and high standards of) laboratory hygiene, biohazard handling, and universal precautions.

  • Proven ability to interact constructively with diverse staff members and to communicate technical information accurately.

  • Proven ability to work one-on-one comfortably and respectfully with active drug users.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of how to safely and effectively store and transport biological specimen to various locations/laboratories. Knowledge of (and high standards of) laboratory hygiene, biohazard handling, and universal precautions.

  • Proven ability to write out the step-by-step sample collection and processing instructions in detail for phlebotomists, LVNs, and nurse practitioner can follow along.

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating daily schedule with different departments and how this will impact each departments’ planned assessments.

  • Demonstrated experience working with the nuances and reconciliation of billing and coordinate with fund managers.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must have access to reliable transportation or valid CA driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be willing to work at a large HIV/NeuroAIDS and cannabis research center with participants with HIV, history of drug abuse, and impairment.

  • Occasional overtime, evenings and weekends may be required.


Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,996 - $67,129 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.86 - $32.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
