This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite in Hillcrest and remote.

Incumbent is responsible for overseeing sample collection and processing in the Laboratory Unit at the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Program within the Department of Psychiatry. This includes directing the work of a team of certified phlebotomists who provide scientific support to more than thirty studies. Incumbent will also oversee creation of datasets, performance of biomarker assays, data analyses, progress reports, and quality assurance. Incumbent will research, design and implement more effective strategies for conducting the day-to-day work of the lab and will oversee and coordinate study start-up of new projects. Incumbent will also be responsible for hiring, supervising, training, and evaluating phlebotomists. Incumbent will contribute to, prepare, and disseminate written reports on clinical and laboratory findings, which are used in but not limited to: grant submissions, revisions and renewals; funded research study progress reports; and laboratory and facilities assessments. Incumbent will work with administrative team to reconcile active budgets and submit new budgets for future work. They will also contribute to and attend scientific presentations for both internal seminars at the HNRP and presentations given at scientific conferences. Assist with other project and miscellaneous duties as required.

  • Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.

  • Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research or instructional / experimental design). Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings.

  • Advanced knowledge of a limited variety of specialized laboratory equipment.

  • Leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities and scheduling instructional space. Proven ability to work in an environment with constantly changing priorities and ensure completion of multiple projects.

  • Solid interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.

  • Knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques.

  • Advanced knowledge of research discipline or instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function as a resource to research and instructional associates.

  • Solid interpersonal communication skills to effectively supervise staff. Must be able to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings.

  • Knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines.

  • Demonstrated experience in supervising schedules of laboratory staff in order to ensure appropriate coverage of functions and distribution of responsibilities of the laboratory.

  • Demonstrated experience in identifying relevant research questions, formulating hypotheses and determining how to address these.

  • Demonstrated experience in contributing significantly to the development of research or experiments, annual progress reports, budget management, grant and institutional review board submissions, and statistical analyses.

  • Proven expertise in prioritizing their workload independently and giving direction to other team members.

  • Strong demonstrated leadership skills to coordinate and train laboratory staff.

  • Demonstrated experience in adhering and updating standardized research protocols.

  • Demonstrated experience in making original contributions to the research design and conducting statistical analyses for publication.

  • Demonstrated experience in working at a program(s) focused on HIV, methamphetamine, cannabis, and other comorbidity research.

  • Proven ability to direct the work of a team of certified phlebotomists who provide scientific support to more than thirty HNRP studies.

  • Demonstrated experience to oversee creation of datasets, performance of biomarker assays, data analyses, progress reports, and quality assurance.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Must be reachable after hours in case there is an integrity issue with one of the many freezers that house 600,000+ research specimens.

  • Must be willing to work with HIV positive specimens.

  • Must possess a valid CA driver's license and/or access to reliable transportation.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.


Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $67,200 - $119,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.18 - $57.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
