Summary

The HLA Lab in the Division of Abdominal Transplant at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a competent and reliable HLA Technologist III to perform complex laboratory testing for the purpose of matching donor organs and recipients for transplant. Main responsibilities include performing various clinical lab tests, quality control, new test or procedural development and maintenance procedures in the laboratory. This position will participate in the development and testing of laboratory research projects or new clinical testing validation procedures. The HLA Technologist III must possess a proactive, team-oriented attitude with a strong work ethic. All duties and responsibilities are performed in compliance with the government and Baylor College of Medicine policies and procedures, rules, regulations, and codes.

 

Work hours will be from 11:00pm - 7:30am (Monday-Friday) OR 4:30 p.m. - 1:30 a.m. (Sunday - Thursday); and participates in the laboratory’s on-call rotation (24/7)


Job Duties
  • Performs and assures the accuracy of histocompatibility testing and results.
  • Evaluates immunologic status of transplant candidates before and after transplantation.
  • Maintains complete records of transplant patients; prepares and enters data and test results into computer.
  • Participates in quality control, quality improvement and safety activities/procedures and maintains appropriate data and records.
  • Assists in evaluation of new testing procedures and techniques and in updating the laboratory manual.
  • Schedules work assignments within a specialized laboratory section and instructs new employees and section personnel in new and established procedures.
  • Assists the laboratory supervisor in maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies, data record keeping, and maintaining laboratory accreditation with all appropriate government and professional agencies.
  • Updates personnel with new and established procedures and protocols.
  • Gathers and analyzes clinical data to be submitted for meeting abstracts, presentations or manuscripts.
  • Participates in the laboratory’s on-call rotation (24/7) for the histocompatibility testing of all deceased donors.
  • Provides adequate training for technologists and performs preliminary review of clinical lab testing results before supervisor or director for final review.
  • Participates in gathering data for virtual testing interpretation.
  • Participates in projects assigned by supervisor or manager which include case studies, abstract presentations, forms review, research studies, etc.
  • Duties and responsibilities are performed in compliance with all governmental and the Baylor College of Medicine policies, rules, regulations, and codes.
  • Performs, understands, communicates, and complies with standard and conditions set by various governmental and accrediting agencies including CAP, CMS, ASHI and CLIA.
  • Attends continuing education programs and maintains current knowledge in the field.
  • Attends all mandatory programs on Universal Precautions, Disaster Plan, Electrical and Fire Safety, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Environment Safety, and Biosafety and Hazard Communication Program.
  • Maintains compliance with wearing PPE and OHSA guidelines. 

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Science or a related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Three years of relevant experience.
  • Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI).
