Position Summary
The technologist will have the primary purpose of performing diagnostic laboratory procedures on tissue specimens obtained from patients with renal disease (light microscopy, immunofluorescence microscopy, electron microscopy) The technologist is responsible for processing, embedding, sectioning, staining and storage/retrieval of samples submitted for diagnostic testing, mainly microscopy. The technologist will establish staining protocols. Job duties include cross-training in all histological techniques used by the laboratory including, but not limited to, light, electron and immunofluorescence microscopy techniques and immunohistological methodologies. The technologist assists with other duties, such as, general laboratory maintenance, according to UNC-CH, SOM, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies, maintaining logs and laboratory operating manuals, ordering supplies and appropriately managing laboratory waste. The technologist will participate in training activities and serve as a technical resource for residents/fellows, graduate students, new staff and other scientists seeking knowledge of histologic procedures. 
Work will additionally require participation in evaluating new methods, kits, procedures and equipment as well as quality assessment activities such as monitoring equipment, quality control and proficiency testing. This will include quality improvement activities and health and safety oversight for laboratory microscopy services. These responsibilities require a high degree of technical and organizational ability, and a solid educational background in biological sciences. The technologist will also participate in various experimental studies and will provide technical help and input as needed. Work is supervised by higher level medical laboratory personnel and the director of the division.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Histotechnologist knowledge should include: microtomy, pipetting, microscopy, basic statistical analysis, computer applications and databases (Microsoft Office Excel), preparation of specimens for microscopic procedures including light, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and some electron microscopy.
Able to work independently and collaboratively with other lab technical personnel, fellows and faculty, have attention to detail and be able to maintain laboratory equipment logs, supplies, specimen records, records of quality assurance, laboratory SOPs and follow patient record confidentiality.
Must be comfortable training students and technicians on laboratory techniques and safety processes.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Certification as an HTL or HT .
