What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the U.S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) are seeking a highly motivated and technically excellent postdoctoral researcher in experimental condensed matter physics focusing on quantum information. Two possible projects are (1) frustrated magnets and spin liquids in particular Kitaev spin liquids with Majorana fermions and (2) molecular magnetic materials including qubit behavior and magnetoelectric coupling. The successful candidate can choose to participate in one or both as well as other projects that arise in a collaborative and fast-based researched environment. Research general involves measurements of magnetic, electrical, thermodynamic and structural properties in DC and pulsed magnetic fields, taking advantage of the capabilities available at the Pulsed Field Facility (PFF). The position also provides opportunities for industrious candidates to pursue new collaborations, develop complementary techniques, and perform independent research within related topics.
What You Need
Qualifications We Require:
Education: A Ph.D in experimental condensed matter physics or related field completed within the past 5 years.
Effective written and verbal communication skills as evinced by publications, presentations, cover letter, and references
Experience with cryogenics and/or high magnetic field measurements in magnetic materials.
Qualifications We Desire:
Experiencein one or more of the followingareas:
§ Magnetoelectric coupling/multiferroics
§ Spin liquids
§ Frustrated magnetism
§ Measurements of electric polarization
§ Magnetization measurements
§ Molecule-based magnetic materials
§ Spin crossover materials
Note to Applicants:
Interested candidates can contact Vivien Zapf firstname.lastname@example.org
§ Cover letter addressing the qualifications outlined above. Please list names and contact information of three possible references
§ One notable published paper or pre-print (co-)authored by the candidate (.pdf format)
This is a two-year appointment, with a possibility of a third. Highly competitive candidates will be considered for prestigious position as a LANL Director’s Postdoctoral Fellow.
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Climbing stairs, walking, working flexible hours or irregular schedule, work near electrical power supplies.
Work in a noisy environment, work near electrical power supplies, work near machinery with moving parts, cleaning chemicals, safety glasses or eye protection, face shield or facial protection, mask or respirator, hearing protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes or protective foot gear.
Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Equal Opportunity: Los Alamos National Laboratory is an equal opportunity employer and supports a diverse and inclusive workforce.
