CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DOD) and other public lands. Position Summary
A Heavy Equipment Operator position at Fort Stewart, Georgia is available with Colorado State University’s (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML).
The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate heavy equipment such as: 10 to 25 ton dump trucks (25 ton off road dumps at some locations) dozers, motor graders, front-in loaders, vibratory compactors, scrapers, forestry mowers (FECON), track hoes, agricultural tractors, and back hoes for the purpose of completing Forestry projects. Primary functions are soil stabilization and vegetation management on Army lands. This position will also require tracking and preparing monthly and quarterly reports. The successful candidate must reside in the Installation vicinity; telecommuting is not available for this position.

Required Job Qualifications
* A High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent required.
The successful candidate must have a valid Georgia Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) or be able to obtain a Georgia Class A CDL by the employment start date.
* 2 years professional experience.
* Experience with running and maintaining heavy equipment.
* Must be skilled in the operation, maintenance and repair of bulldozers, dump trucks, excavators, front-end loaders, whole tree chippers and tractor-trailer trucks.
* Ability to maneuver equipment in confined areas.
* Possess basic knowledge of terrain and soil composition in order to determine approach for equipment.
* Ability to read maps, aerial photographs, and compasses. Familiar with installation roads, bridges, and access ways.
* Required to have ability, licenses, medical certificates and certifications to operate all Forestry heavy equipment over paved and dirt roads.
* Physically able to perform strenuous labor outdoors in all types of weather and hazardous working conditions including intense heat and humidity as well as smoke situations encountered during prescribed burns.
* Be able to follow directions, work collectively with others as a team, and maintain safe working standards
* Able to lift 40 pounds repeatedly.
* Must obtain and maintain Georgia Level 1A Erosion and Sedimentation Certification required for moving/disturbing soil within the first 90 days of employment.
* Must obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid certification within the first 90 days of employment.
* The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States
by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
* Candidate must be able to comply with all applicable regulations to obatin a Common Access Card (CAC. Furthermore, candidates are required at a minimum to complete a NACI/SF85 and successfully pass a federal background check to remain eligible for employment by CSU.

Operate whole tree chipper to chip logging debris (tops and limbs) and unmerchantable timber to be burned as fuel at the Installation’s Central Energy Plant (CEP). Operate a frontend loader with grapple attachment to bring tops and limbs to the chipper in the field. Operate a 5th-wheel type tractor/trailer chip van to haul chips to the CEP.

Operate a dump truck to haul dirt and other materials over paved and dirt roads. During emergencies, peak workloads, or for cross training the employee, may be required to operate a motor grader or crawler tractor under the close supervision of a government employee. Duties performed may include but are not limited to rough grading of access-ways located on the reservation. Operate a 5th-wheel type tractor/trailer equipped with air brake connections between truck, tractor and trailer to move heavy equipment from job site to job site or to the storage yard. Load and unload heavy equipment at job site or storage yard assuring load distribution, safety requirements, and established procedures are adhered to. Identify job site from GIS maps, aerial photographs, or verbal instructions. Determine route and deliver equipment required.

Support and assist government employees in conducting prescribed burning by using a tractor-plow unit, pumper truck or hand tools. Use aerial photographs, GIS maps and hand compass to plow firebreaks. Work may be performed in dense forest or open areas. Occasionally man a 100-foot fire tower used for coordination and communication during prescribed burning operations.
