About the Opportunity:

Northeastern University Library seeks an engaging and innovative individual to join our STEM & Entrepreneurship Team in Boston, Massachusetts in a newly created Health Sciences Librarian position. Reporting to the Head of STEM & Entrepreneurship, the Health Sciences Librarian will serve as liaison to departments in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences and other related departments throughout the University. The Health Sciences Librarian provides high quality, learner-centered teaching, learning, and research support virtually and in-person through instruction sessions, consultations, and the creation of asynchronous learning resources for students, faculty, instructors, staff, and research labs. To both help support University research initiatives and better support the campus, the Health Sciences Librarian will also develop skills in a specialized support area such as bibliometrics, open science & collaborative research platforms, 3D printing, and/or data science. This includes building knowledge, monitoring trends, and developing support for specialized area(s) as needs emerge.

About the Department & the Library

The STEM & Entrepreneurship department is a team within the Research & Instruction department. Team members across Research & Instruction are deeply engaged in teaching and learning support and are actively developing partnerships and new modes of support for information, data, and digital literacies. A major focus in Research and Instruction is online learning and the creation of interdisciplinary and discipline-specific learning objects. Other signature initiatives include expanding collaboration with labs, centers, and institutes through research data services, support for systematic reviews and other forms of scholarly communication.

The Research & Instruction department is located within the Research & Learning Division and consists of three teams: the STEM & Entrepreneurship team, the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities team, and the Online Learning and Global Campus Engagement team.

The Northeastern University Library supports the mission of the University by working in partnership with the University community to develop and disseminate new scholarship. The Library fosters intellectual and professional growth, enriches the research, teaching, and learning environment, and promotes the effective use of knowledge by managing and delivering information resources and services to library users.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver instruction sessions and materials in person, online, and/or asynchronously on information literacy for health sciences both within and outside of courses.
  • Provide open workshops on topics such as citation tools, discovery tools, review types, and other knowledge/areas/tools supporting the needs of students, faculty, instructors, and/or researchers.
  • Develop online learning objects, research guides, and other web resources partnering with other liaisons when appropriate.
  • Provide research support such as scheduled consultations, on-demand research help, and classroom instruction both in person and online.
  • Partner with staff across the library to support systematic reviews, research data management, scholarly communications, repository services, helping to build support around emerging researcher needs, resources, and tools at Northeastern and in the larger health sciences field.
  • Maintain frequent, ongoing communication with students, faculty, instructors, and researchers in assigned disciplines to actively support teaching and research as well as promote library services, offerings, and initiatives.
  • Evaluate and select materials in assigned disciplines appropriate to meet the needs of the university. Recommend budget levels and expend allotted budgets. Evaluate collections to meet program, accreditation, and grant activities.
  • Build knowledge, monitor trends, and if relevant, develop an interdisciplinary program for a specialized support area serving as a subject matter expert within the library.  
  • Actively participate in the Northeastern community through committees, teams, working groups, projects, or initiatives that further the university's mission 
  • Keep abreast of developments and trends in the rapidly-changing field of academic librarianship

    Qualifications: 

    MLS or equivalent degree. At least 2 years of experience working as a research librarian in an academic research, hospital, or other medical environment, preferably with a Health Sciences background or supporting Health Sciences fields. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as an interest in applying a culturally competent lens to teaching and learning. Strong skills in collaboration and teamwork within a fast paced, dynamic, continually evolving environment. Proactive attitude and ability to take initiative, develop, and carry out projects as well as manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Strong service orientation and interest in focusing on/developing an understanding of user needs. Successful candidates must be willing to experiment, learn, adapt, iterate, and share their own ideas/projects with colleagues as well as provide constructive feedback on projects/ideas from other team members.
