Overview:

The College of Medicine (COM) Office for Diversity and Inclusion at The Ohio State University is pleased to announce a search for the Health Science Academies (HSA) and Champion Middle School Ginn Pease Research program lead. The HSA and Ginn Pease Research program lead provides vision and leadership in health science careers that values and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion. This individual will report to the Associate Dean for Diversity & Inclusion (ODI) for the COM and will work closely with the Director of Health Sciences & Outreach in the College of Education & Human Ecology, the staff in the Office of Diversity & Inclusion for the COM, and Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate cultural awareness and agility, exercise emotional intelligence, build trust and credibility, engage students at the K-12 school levels, and collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders to achieve program goals. 


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the Health Science Academies Schools
  • Teach, coach, and mentor leadership of 21st century skills: critical thinking, communication, citizenship, creativity, collaboration, and growth mindset to students in the Ginn Pease Research program to succeed in health science fields;
  • Work closely with the Columbus Partners Achieving Community Transformation (PACT), Director of ODI, Community Health Education (CHE), and staff to serve Champion middle school and East High school each year to create scientific projects that provide scientific inquiry, insights to health sciences careers and pathways, high school selection, and college and career readiness;
  • Create problem-based learning curriculum for Champion Middle School Ginn Pease Research Program that incorporates 21st century skills that culminates into a research day at the COM annually. Collaborate with school, ODI, COM, colleges of health sciences and other stakeholders, to ensure holistic, comprehensive programming, events, and resources for student participants;
  • Provide programming and mentorship to East high school students, create and maintain mentoring program with College of Medicine students and high school students. Collaborate with Community Health Education to provide direction and oversite of medical student projects with in East High School; create a pathway from East High to OSU & the Office of Diversity & Inclusion to the OSU COM & the Office of Diversity & Inclusion;
  • Develop and monitor metrics applicable to the COM ODI diversity, equity and inclusion goals. This includes periodically assessing, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the productivity and success of programs, policies, and services. This individual will present annual progress reports to ODI leadership;
  • Serve as a results-oriented catalyst for change throughout the program by inspiring students to achieve new levels of expertise, confidence, and productivity.
  • Other special projects to be determined in consultation with the Director of COM ODI and the Associate Dean.



Key Performance Indicators:

Each first year of this program, the HSA Instructor will be held accountable to the following key performance indicators:

  • Recruiting 20-30 students to participate in the Ginn Pease Research program. Creation of a report each Spring (generally April 1st) that documents current state of program, including specific data on faculty, staff, trainees, and existing programmatic efforts;
  • Submitting an annual progress report (due April 30th), demonstrating how the HAS and Ginn Pease Research program fostered health science pathways to careers throughout the program to ensure students understand that health science careers are attainable and the impact of these efforts. This report will be utilized in the annual evaluation to the funder of the program
  • Participation in or development of pathway programs to increase number of persons from historically excluded groups in medicine and biomedical science



Position Details:

The faculty member serving as Health Science Academy Instructor will be expected to dedicate 200 hours over 10-12 months to the role (0.10 FTE). This position is a contract via the COM for a period of one year, with the option to be reappointed at the end of the one-year term.  Preference for primary care physicians.
