Position Summary:

Coordinate medical record statewide surveillance for the Iowa Registry for Congenital and Inherited Disorders (IRCID) by: establishing and maintaining professional liaisons in regional hospitals, laboratories, and clinics; scheduling and performing independent data collection; writing and submitting progress reports; assisting with the design and development of related forms, manuals, and reports; participating in quality control efforts; and maintaining confidentiality of data.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Independently and efficiently coordinate and perform work in an assigned territory
  • Maintain organized and efficient data files
  • Interpret medical diagnostic data and conduct case finding, abstracting, and coding based on IRCID requirements
  • Enter and submit abstracts and follow‑up data using a PC-based system
  • Assist with statistical analysis of surveillance and survey data
  • Maintain confidentiality of data collected
  • Participate in quality control efforts and implementation of ongoing technical and operational changes
  • Write and submit progress reports
  • Assist with the design and development of related forms, manuals, and reports
  • Establish and maintain professional liaisons with hospitals, laboratories, physicians, and other programs caring for children in the state
  • Respond to requests for information from various public and private agencies and from individuals
  • Participate in continuing education opportunities, including biannual IRCID abstractor meetings, and actively seek methods for professional improvement
  • Assist in the training of assigned staff and students

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Health Management, Nursing, Biological Sciences, or closely related fields, or a combination of related education and experience.

Experience:

  • One year (12 months) of progressive experience in:
    • Conducting social science research; and
    • Medical record abstraction or disease data collection

Special Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Experience with computerized databases
  • Ability to function independently
  • Ability to travel overnight

This position is eligible for a combination of remote work and in-person (hybrid) work and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location .

Infrequent overnight travel is required to regional hospitals, laboratories, and clinics in the State of Iowa. Duration of any such travel is limited to 1 to 2 days. Travel is infrequent but may be required to establish and maintain professional liaisons in regional hospitals, laboratories, and clinics in the Dallas Ft. Worth metropolitan area.
