Job Summary: |
The half time (0.50 FTE) Health Promotion Teacher will lead the YES-CAN! (“Youth Engaged Strategies to Change Adolescent Norms) vaping prevention program in two Denver high schools with large Spanish-speaking student populations during the 2024/2025 school year. YES-CAN! is a novel, school-based vaping prevention program that uses a youth-participatory approach and a peer leader model to discourage the uptake of nicotine vaping among young adolescents. The program will be delivered through a year-long (two semester) general elective class for high school students. The successful candidate will use the program’s academically grounded curriculum to guide high school students in developing short narrative-based vaping prevention videos, text messaging campaigns, and other educational materials and then delivering them to middle school students during classroom-based sessions. Prior to the start of the program class, the teacher will review and refine the lessons, which include a) the health effects of nicotine and nicotine vaping, b) healthy strategies for reducing stress, c) ways to refuse nicotine vaping and other substances when they are offered, d) health education and communication strategies for young adolescents, e) how to create a story for a video, f) how to write, shoot, and edit a short video, g) how to develop an effective presentation for young adolescents and lead them in discussions and activities, and h) how to develop and run a text messaging campaign to reduce risky health behaviors. They will also help align lesson content with academic standards and 21st Century skills. During the program, the teacher will use best practices for engaging high school students as peer leaders in a skills-based, student-driven, project-based learning experience while also supporting them in meeting the academic objectives of the curriculum. The teacher will provide a foundation for youth to actively participate by offering developmentally appropriate levels of guidance and support and serving as a role model and source of positive reinforcement. The teacher will also develop systems for evaluating student performance in the class. The teacher will have an hour-long weekly meeting with the project manager and/or study investigators to discuss lesson development and/or delivery as well as necessary modifications to course content or activities. Once the school year starts in August, the teacher will be in the classroom approximately 10 hours per week. The remainder of their time will be spent preparing for lessons. Remote work is acceptable for preparation time. Travel to two school sites in the Denver metro-area (John F. Kennedy High School and Abraham Lincoln High School) is required. We expect the grant-funded position to start on June 15, 2024 and end on June 30, 2025. Key Responsibilities include:
