Position Details
Wesleyan University has approximately 3,000 undergraduate and 140 graduate students. The Office of Health Education, known on-campus as WesWell, provides education, training, and outreach to help students develop and maintain healthy behaviors to support their academic success and personal well-being. Programs and topics include mental health, physical health, sexual health, alcohol and other drug education, bystander education, and other topics. WesWell operates on a weekday schedule of 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM with occasional evening commitments.
Reporting to the Director of WesWell, the Health Promotion Specialist will concentrate on mental health education and provide mental health education and prevention initiatives to the Wesleyan community of students, faculty, and staff in the areas of resilience building, holistic wellness, and suicide prevention.
It is important to note, this position is not a clinical position, nor does this role provide therapeutic services. This person is considered a responsible employee (mandated reporter) and is therefore NOT a confidential resource to students.
The Health Promotion Specialist is responsible for program development, planning, and implementation, as well as the evaluation/assessment of those programs. This position will be focused on outreach and facilitating trainings regarding mental health.
Specific responsibilities include:
  • Coordinating and facilitating the development and execution of campus-wide emotional wellness programs that integrate academic learning with individual student development with the objective of fostering individual, interpersonal, and community wellness.
  • Working closely with WesWell staff, Davison Health Center (DHC), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), The Office of Equity and Inclusion, The Resource Center, Office of Religious and Spiritual Life (ORSL), Reslife, Academic Affairs, the Deans’ Office, Public Safety, and various student groups to deliver primary mental health prevention initiatives to Wesleyan students, faculty, and staff.
  • Creating mental health education and training events throughout the academic year.
  • Coordinating a wellness promotion fair for the student body
  • Work with students one on one via the WesWell Wellness Coaching program to develop self-care skills
  • Developing and delivering resilience-building programming.
  • Delivering Safe Zone (LGBTQIA+ Allyship) training events. ·
  • Coordinating and delivering Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) suicide prevention training events.
  • Develop resources to promote mental health and well-being for students
  • Collaborating with the directors of WesWell, DHC, and CAPS in order to present collaborative multidisciplinary prevention programming to the Wesleyan community. ·
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position is located on-campus in Middletown, CT
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in health education, public health, higher education, social work, counseling, or a related field and at least one year of experience with mental health prevention/promotion programming or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Experience leading or facilitating educational trainings to groups of people.
Knowledge of educational program development
Experience with resource material development
Demonstrated commitment to working within a diverse environment and interacting collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.
Knowledge of well-being challenges that underrepresented populations face.
Experience in advocacy for health and well-being needs of a community.
Demonstrated ability to build effective collaborative relationships
Effective communication skills.
Excellent project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree
  • At least two years of professional experience working in mental health prevention in a higher education or community setting.
