Position Title Health Promotion Specialist

Position Summary
Under the leadership of the Medical Director, the Health Promotion Specialist will be part of the team that works to make the campus community healthier by helping to create structures and settings that prioritize well-being. They will develop, implement, evaluate, and manage a variety of multifaceted health promotion initiatives and processes for the campus community based on sound theory and evidenced and informed practice of college health promotion. Main responsibilities include:
  • Advance community health and well-being – work to embed well-being into the fabric of the campus community.
  • Campus capacity building – develop and maintain relationships with campus partners and consult on campus initiatives that center well-being.
  • Disseminate health information to the campus community – develop, coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate interactive trainings and workshops

This is a temporary position through 05/31/2023. Position may be shorten or extended.
This position is considered a “Responsible Employee” under Title IX federal regulations and “Mandatory Reporter” under Texas state law and the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you, as the employee, to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about Title IX violations. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Job Duties


Job Duty Name Advance Community Health and Well-Being (50%)
Description of Job Duties
  • In partnership with the Medical Director and health promotion strategy team, develop a framework for engaging in a systems and settings approach to advance the health and well-being of the campus community.
  • Help disseminate and advance the University of the Incarnate Word well-being dimensions.
  • Manage, disseminate, and report on environmental and population-based assessments of health status, assets, needs, and resources of the campus community. Develop proposals for policy, programs and other interventions, and departmental goals and objectives based on findings.
  • Develop, coordinate, and evaluate health promotion initiatives of UIW Health and submit periodic and annual reports on program progress and outcomes, including developing proposals for enhancements or changes as appropriate.
  • Train interns and student casuals in their responsibilities on the UIW Health Promotion team.
  • Serve on committees, task forces, and participate in professional group meetings to advance and contribute to the causes of public health and health related issues.
  • Serve as key resource and subject matter experts to campus partners; Assist faculty/staff/students with engagement strategies, develop best practice tool kits, present frameworks.
  • Develop and support programs for employee and student wellness including nutrition and fitness prescription.
  • Work with student athletes in supporting programs for sports nutrition, mental health, performance screening and enhancement.
Job Duty Name Capacity Building (30%)
Description of Job Duties
  • Develop and maintain relationships with numerous constituencies on campus, including, but not limited to, Undergraduate Student Life, University Life, Athletics and Physical Education, the University’s schools and departments, clinical and other UIW Health staff, and student organizations.
  • Provide consultation to campus partners on creating evidence-informed, theory-based, student-centered, and equity-minded initiatives to support student well-being.
Job Duty Name Disseminate Health Information in Campus Community (15%)
Description of Job Duties
  • As part of the UIW Health team contribute to maintenance and testing of future iterations of the UIW Health website.
  • Develop, coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate interactive training and programs for student groups and university staff on a variety of health- and well-being-related topics.
  • Respond to inquiries about health information and services from students, staff, and faculty, referring, when appropriate, to campus services or community organizations.

Required Education
Bachelor’s degree. Or
Working on a bachelor’s degree; eligible for graduation; in good academic standing.
Required Work Experience
Minimum 1-3 years of experience in public health, health promotion, or other closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Sports Dietician.
  • Master’s or advanced degree preferred in public health, health promotion, social work, or other closely related field.
  • Experience working and advocating within a complex organization with an understanding of larger institutional goals and objectives.
  • Experience working with college students and a strong interest in higher education.

None required.
Work Hours
Typical Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm with occasional extended hours/weekends to meet departmental needs and/or needs of the learning community.
