Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree


Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Safety & Health, Biology/Life Sciences, Health Physics or Nuclear Sciences, Engineering, or related field.
Experience which demonstrates exceptional performance in one or more of the following areas: nuclear medicine, radiology, laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, general safety, biosafety, radiation safety, regulatory compliance or other related ESH activities.
Technical training/experience covering OSHA, EPA, NFPA or related workplace regulations, guidelines and standards.
Demonstrate work experience at a Department of Energy National Laboratory, college/university, or other research laboratories
Accredited certifications in hazardous materials, safety, health physics, or other fields (i.e. NMTCB, ARRT, CHMM, ASP/CSP, CHP, CIH, etc.)

Ames Laboratory is seeking a Health Physicist I or II to support the Environmental Programs within the Environment, Safety and Health department. The Health Physicist implements control programs in health physics, radiation safety, laser, radiofrequency, and other electromagnetic energy sources to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and industry standards of practice. Provides technical advice and program support to Ames Laboratory and backup support to Iowa State University. This individual will provide health physics support to program elements that implement the Ames Laboratory strategic plan, mission, vision, and goals.

In addition to the duties above, the Health Physicist I/II will be expected to monitor and revise these programs, conduct surveys, inspections and evaluate compliance.

Excellent coordination and communication skills are needed to effectively negotiate and appropriately influence the safety behavior of individual lab workers, group leaders, and research lab groups towards better procedures for best management practices.  This position involves multiple tasks with the ability to prioritize various temporally interrelated tasks and complete them as efficiently as possible.


Required qualification for Health Physicist I: Bachelor’s degree (paygrade PS808)

Required qualification for Health Physicist II: Bachelor’s degree & 3 years related experience (paygrade PS810)
