Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,060 - $5,319 per month

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

 

THE DEPARTMENT:

Student Health & Wellness Services is one component of the Campus Health and Wellbeing Cluster within the Division of Student Affairs. This new cluster stresses the University's commitment to preventative and holistic approaches to wellbeing in support of students and the institution's mission and strategic plan. In addition to Student Health & Wellness Services, this cluster includes Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Integrated Care Network and the Disability Resource Center. The mission of Student Health and Wellness Services is to promote students' healthy lifestyles and academic success by providing quality medical, psychological, and wellness services. The department provides ambulatory health care, health education programs, prevention and healing services to students of Cal Poly Pomona.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Health Educator will be responsible for the following:

  • Design, conduct and evaluate community health promotion/disease prevention education programs to improve health knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of students using health promotion theories, evidence based best practices, outcome evaluation, statistical analysis, and health behavior research methodologies.
  • Design, operate, and maintain health education services in support of the mission of SHWS including nutrition education, stress management, time management, alcohol and other drugs, exercise education and sexual health education to the campus community.
  • Provide individual one-on-one patient education recorded in the Electronic Medical Record on a variety of health issues including nutrition education, stress management, time management, alcohol and other drugs, exercise education and sexual health. Assist supervision of peer health educators as they provide health education.
  • Conduct, analyze, and disseminate research data on the health of college students and prevention initiatives using existing data collection instruments such as the National College Health Assessment (NCHA).
  • Assist in marketing and campus outreach efforts to increase student awareness of Student Health & Wellness services. Coordinate and conduct outreach activities to interconnect SHWS to the campus community, such as UHS, OSLCC, ASI, Orientation Services, Athletics, and student clubs and organizations. Contribute to web contents and social media relative to health promotion.
  • Work with campus partners to create, develop, implement, and evaluate healthy campus initiatives. Serve on University committees and task forces. Develop and maintain productive relationships with departments and individuals in the University community.
  • Serves as member of SHS Committees. Advocate for health promotion activities. Work to ensure standards established by American College Health Association (ACHA) and the health and wellness standards of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) for health promotion are met.
  • Train, mentor, coach and evaluate Peer Health Educators.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from a 4-year college in an approved program in public health, health education, nutrition social work, social sciences, or a closely related field of study.
  • Equivalent to one to two years of progressively responsible health education experience or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of health education theories, research, and program assessment; planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs; and industry standards for the delivery of health education in higher education. General knowledge of, or the ability to learn quickly, current and emerging college age student health problems and existing methods of intervention and control. Working knowledge of the principles of educational and social psychology and how these apply to health education program; and applicable industry standards and practices for health promotion such as those found in the American College Health Association’s “Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education”.
  • Ability to assess needs and establish or recommend program priorities and goals and develop plans to achieve goals; collect, compile, chart, and analyze data pertinent to health education program planning; plan, organize, conduct or oversee a variety of health education program and activities including discussion groups and workshops; develop educational materials and media such as pamphlets, audio and video materials, and electronic media; present ideas and information accurately, effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing; use computer and web-based information technology systems as a resource for research and providing health education programs; maintain confidentiality consistent with applicable laws and regulations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, students, medical, and other health professionals, representatives of the news media, and other community groups.

 

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-5 years of progressively responsible health promotion experience which indicates possession of the knowledge and abilities listed in the position description.
  • Background in health promotion with college population, knowledge of or experience Institutional Review Board processes with Masters Degree in Public Health or Health Education, Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
  • Must be familiar with health promotion issues particularly those pertinent to college students, including alcohol, tobacco, sexual health, HIV, nutrition, exercise, and fitness.
  • Must be able to create action plans to create healthy communities and to lead productive teams.
  • Must understand and be able to interconnect community education, patient, and The Wellness Center activities. Ability to develop and implement community-based health promotion.
  • Ability to provide individual and group education on a broad range of health education issues including alcohol, tobacco, sexual health, nutrition, stress reduction and exercise.
  • Ability to collaborate and create relationships with colleagues with diverse multidisciplinary backgrounds and needs.
