Counseling & Psychological Services contribute to student learning and development.  We provide exceptional services and programming focused on student mental health.  Counseling & Psychological Services exists to advance student development and academic success by providing personalized and evidenced-based mental health care to Aggies.

What we want

We are searching for a Health Educator who can plan, implement, and evaluate theory and evidence-based mental health promotion strategies, policies, programs, and services for students. Specific responsibilities include:-

  • Providing mental health training and performs outreach functions on and off campus.

  • Indirectly supervising student staff and/or peer educators for HelpLine and Aggies Reaching Aggies.

  • Working closely with CAPS HelpLine and SAPO internal programs, splitting their time 50% for each.

  • Providing assistance in training HelpLine and Aggie Reaching Aggies volunteers and facilitates suicide prevention trainings.

  • Providing assistance in training volunteers each semester for CAPS HelpLine.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Health Education, Public Health, Health Promotion, or applicable field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of related experience in health promotion.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Knowledge of responsibilities and competencies of health education.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to analyze emerging mental health promotion needs of adults and college students.

  • Ability to critically review mental health-related professional literature relevant to college students and assess its applicability and utility for effectiveness on the college campus.

  • Ability to do presentations, workshop trainings, individual behavior change sessions, and small group discussions and facilitations.

  • Knowledge of mental health, campus programming, social justice and multiculturalism.

Other Requirements:

  • This position will routinely work in the evening and weekends to meet student needs during organizational meetings, HelpLine meetings, and presentation needs.

  • This position will work onsite in the Student Services Building.

  • This position will work overnight shifts on the HelpLine call service.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience providing mental health education, developing programs, and building campus or other partnership collaborations.  

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bilingual in any language.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).

Responsibilities:

  • Training - Trains and monitors Aggies Reaching Aggies peer educators on mental health topics. Prepares and reviews educational materials. Provides training to HelpLine volunteers and Aggies Reaching Aggies volunteers. Provides training to Graduate Assistants. Indirectly supervises student staff and/or peer educators for HelpLine and Aggies Reaching Aggies. Provides gatekeeper suicide prevention trainings and train-the-trainer trainings to campus faculty, staff, and students. Works occasional shifts for HelpLine, including overnight shifts, taking calls for referral, education, and Aggie support.

  • Campus Engagement - Maintains collaborative relationships with student leaders, campus faculty, staff, and community partners. Serves as a campus resource for timely, current, and relevant mental health information as it relates to college mental health. Assists HelpLine and SAPO with campus marketing campaigns during HelpLine Awareness Week, Suicide Awareness Month, Suicide Awareness Week, and other CAPS initiatives. Provides outreach to campus sharing about CAPS services and resources through tabling events, presentations, and by request. Provides outreach to campus teaching a variety of mental health education topics such as National Depression screening day, mental health awareness month, national Check on Your Friend Day, etc. Coordinates and executes campus recruitment campaigns for HelpLine and Aggies Reaching Aggies volunteers. Works closely with the Communications Coordinator to create social media content related to mental health education.

  • Program Development - Collaborates with key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to mental health for students. Develops strategic plans, goals, and measurable objectives for mental health promotion programs and services. Develops programming content for educational events to be presented through Campus Engagement presentations. Develops program content, learning resources, and evaluation tools for specific educational interventions based upon needs assessment results. Develops, implements, and analyzes periodic student mental health surveys which provide baseline and follow up health data that identifies program needs and priorities. Evaluates the effectiveness of programs and services and tracks trends in student health statuses and behaviors. Incorporates multicultural diversity concepts and principles into mental health promotions. Develops recruitment programming for HelpLine and Aggies Reaching Aggies volunteers. Performs other duties as assigned.
