Assist with implementing an approved plan for camper health and safety. Under the supervision of the Health Director, maintain campers' health records and medicines. Respond to camper and staff injuries and illness and applying first aid as needed. May assist with opening day health screening for overnight campers and reports to the Health Director and the Assistant Health Director.

    

Required Qualifications:

  • LPN or EMT licensed to practice in New York State
  • Certifications in CPR/AED and epi-pen.
  • Able to lift up to 20 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or background in school, visiting or public health nursing, desirable.

Administrative Responsibilities:
 

Management – 40%

  • Ensure all medical requirements and procedures described in the camp safety plan approved by the Suffolk County Department of Health are met daily.
  • Manage health emergencies and injuries, including emergency preparedness and provisions for professional health care.
  • Provide supervision for campers who are in the infirmary.

Coordination/Operation – 55%

  • Implement the medical requirements and procedures described in the camp safety plan submitted to and approved by the Suffolk County Department of Health.
  • Assist as needed with opening day health screenings of overnight campers.
  • Determine when a camper must receive attention from a physician or other medical professional.
  • Check medical log entries daily for common ailments and/or increased frequency of cases of illness with similar symptoms (e.g., headache, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, eye infection, sore throat). If noted, contact the local health department immediately for the appropriate intervention strategies to be implemented at the camp to prevent the spread and reoccurrence of the illness.
  • Establish contact with parents or guardians when there are health concerns or an emergency.
  • Report required incidents to the local health department within 24 hours.
  • Coordinate transportation for patients requiring off-campus medical attention.
  • Maintain campers’ health records and medicines.
  • Handle health emergencies and injuries.
  • Maintain camp’s daily medical log.
  • Provide comfort for campers who are in the infirmary.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and meetings.
  • Assist with staff training during pre-service orientation.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe living and working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
