Primary Purpose of Department
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office promotes environmental, health, and safety
compliance within the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus community. The University is committed to the protection of the environment and safety on the job is everyone’s
responsibility. The EHS office provides guidance at all levels of the University to ensure compliance, maintain a safe workplace and to protect the environment.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to research, develop, implement, analyze and continuously improve the Environmental Health and Safety program.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Lead and manage all health and safety compliance programs (e.g., injury prevention, hearing conservation, indoor air quality, bloodborne pathogens, industrial hygiene, personal protective equipment, respiratory protection, medical surveillance, confined space, lock out tag out, and electrical safety). Determine internal operational goals while collaborating with managers to promote regulatory compliance within their respective units. Manage EHS professionals and establish detailed operational plans to accomplish goals.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience; or
  • Master’s degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • A master’s degree in business administration, public administration, management, physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology, or related discipline.
  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., CSP, CIH, ARM, etc.).
  • Seven or more years of demonstrated health and safety program development, leadership, and communication skills equal to the requirements of the position.
  • Experience with establishing a health and safety management system in a higher education or public setting.
  • Experience using technology to automate processes and manage projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and team building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate complex incidents, determine root causes and gain University administrators support to implement remedial actions.
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
A valid drivers license.
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
ASP, CSP, CIH, ARM
