Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose
The Head of System Services and Operations oversees the Library’s access and operation functions. Serves as the system manager for the Library’s Integrated Library System (ILS), Interlibrary Loan (ILL) System, products licensed through the Springshare platform, EBSCO discovery Systems and other systems that is used to manage library access and processes. Provides effective leadership and supervision to access services, collection maintenance, 1 FTE, 1 Temp Casual, and 50+ student workers. Manages all aspects of access services, including circulation, reserves, and stacks maintenance. Resolves access problems and aids in the maintenance of the online catalog. Assists the Dean and Budget Manager in budgetary planning and the gathering statistics. Oversees access and operations functions for both Stockton and Sacramento campus libraries.
Essential Functions
  • Oversees access services department, including the circulation desk, interlibrary loans and collection maintenance. Supervises access services and collection maintenance staff members and directly or indirectly supervises student employees. Tracks work study allotments for student workers. Creates and oversees budget for non-work study student workers.
  • Works with staff to oversee library access management systems, including ILS access services modules (currently Innovative Sierra); self-check systems; room reservation systems; interlibrary loans systems, and other automated systems.
  • Develops, reviews and implements access services policies and procedures. Maintains access services manual.
  • In cooperation with University Libraries staff, serves as the Library’s liaison to the ILS vendor for all operations, facilitates upgrades and troubleshoots problems of ILS hardware and software.
  • Maintains library facilities, equipment, and resources on both campuses.
  • Liaises and collaborates with campus partners including but not limited to academic support services providers, student life, technology services, and campus police.
  • Assists Dean in budgetary planning and gathering statistics.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Five (5) years of experience in supervision and unit management.
  • One (1) year of experience in academic library access services.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MLIS from an ALA accredited school.
  • Substantial knowledge of library databases.
  • Working knowledge of issues and trends in circulation, interlibrary loan, and stacks maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of integrated library systems (ILSs).
  • Substantial knowledge of internet and online research tools and techniques, and instructional technology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in using Microsoft Word and Excel to organize, analyze and manipulate data sets and information.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, written communication and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
  • A strong public service attitude.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work performed during standard business hours with additional hours as needed to address the needs of the organization. Travel to the Sacramento campus or to educational conferences is required.
Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University’s insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range $70,000.00 - $85,000.00. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
