Stanford Libraries is seeking a full-time Head of E-Resources & Data Control to join Metadata Services. The Metadata Services Department creates, enhances, remediates, and transforms descriptive and discovery metadata in multiple schemas to provide discovery and access to library resources in SearchWorks (our Blacklight implementation) and the Stanford Digital Repository, through the integrated work of four units: Metadata Creation, Metadata Design, E-resources and Data Control. E-Resources is charged with the analysis, metadata remediation & loading of e-resource packages and general automated remediation & transformation projects; Data Control concentrates more on manual remediation projects. Unit heads report to the Head of E-Resources & Data Control. Some staff members also participate in the development and documentation of FOLIO workflows and linked data & other experimental metadata projects

The Head of Data Control & E-Resources is responsible for the management of the Data Control & E-Resources units of Metadata Services and serves as Database Manager for the MARC databases through the FOLIO integrated library system (ILS). The position serves as a primary point of contact for FOLIO database management, data import & export, and bulk editing processes. The position works closely with Metadata Services, Library Systems, SUL coordinate and branch libraries and other FOLIO managers to develop and implement policies and workflows, particularly for large-scale metadata import, export and remediation. This position is eligible for a hybrid work agreement.

·         Responsible for the integrity of the bibliographic and authority databases for the local ILS, FOLIO, including data analysis, and development/implementation of quality assurance mechanisms

·         Works with vendors, data exchange partners and internal staff on import/export workflows and issues, including managing data import/export profiles in FOLIO

·         Works closely with DLSS Systems group concerning large-scale maintenance issues and data load priorities

o   Data Control group (1 Operations Manager and 5 FTE staff): database maintenance, bulk collections and gifts/exchange cataloging, dissertation cataloging in Symphony; metadata maintenance of Stanford Digital Repository (SDR) metadata in Argo

o   E-Resources group: (3 FTE staff (2 fixed-term)) loading of vendor-supplied records for e-resources in Symphony; descriptive metadata remediation and enhancement for SDR materials (3 FTE staff)

·         Works with Director for Metadata Services to coordinate cross-SUL development of policies & procedures for FOLIO, including dissemination of information and identifying training needs

·         Serves as member of management team for Metadata Services to improve processes and achieve common goals/solutions across unit boundaries and with other departments, particularly the Acquisitions Department and DLSS

·         Mentors staff for growth opportunities and contributions both within and beyond SUL

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

·         Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·         Experience with the management of an integrated library system, with a strong preference for FOLIO, including potential data flows between FOLIO and outside sources on a large scale, such as with OCLC, SVDE and POD, as well as with e-resource packages. Knowledge of SIRSI Symphony workflows a plus

·         Experience with database remediation, both manual and automated, and in analyzing, remediating and loading e-resource packages

·         Thorough knowledge of the MARC bibliographic, holdings, and authorities formats

·         Proven ability to specify, analyze, test, and troubleshoot database requirements and physical parameters

·         Awareness of current developments and issues in metadata creation and remediation, including innovative uses of technology for data manipulation

·         Ability to learn, analyze, and utilize existing and emerging metadata standards and mappings, such as MODS and BIBFRAME

·         Familiarity with RDF, XML, JSON, and other machine actionable metadata languages

·         Demonstrated experience in basic managerial/supervisory skills

·         Demonstrated project management skills

·         Demonstrated understanding of the broad scope of library operations with ability to understand how their role interacts with the rest of the organization

·         Ability to work effectively in a team environment and negotiate issues with people from different parts of the library

·         Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution and recommend appropriate courses of action

·         Ability to independently juggle and perform complex job functions as part of a larger team

·         Flexibility to be organized, productive and effective in a dynamic environment, working with simultaneous workflows and projects

·         Consistent display of strong verbal and written communication skills.

·         Demonstrated bibliographic expertise or basic managerial/supervisory skills.

Physical Requirements:

·         Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.

·         Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

·         Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).

·         Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.

·         Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position is $85,000 to $106,000 per annum.
