Job Summary/Basic Function:

Plan, direct and supervise the operation staff of Discovery, Continuing Resources, and Cataloging. Oversees the configuration and administration of the cataloging module of the library management system; discovery layer of the online catalog; electronic collection analytics and cost data; licensing, and contract management and compliance.

Albertsons Library is the vibrant, nurturing hub of Boise State. This is an inclusive space where people and diverse ideas flourish through research and creative activities. The Library provides high quality, relevant services to students, faculty, staff, and community members. Resources are available in person, over the phone and/or online. This includes databases, journals, books, interlibrary loan, electronics, a makerlab, and our Special Collections and Archives. We also offer rooms for studying, a family study room for students with children, and spaces for exhibits and events.

Essential Functions:
  • Oversee the general operations of the Discovery and Continuing Resources unit: configuration and administration of the cataloging module of the library management system; discovery layer of the online catalog; electronic collection analytics and cost data; and licensing, contract management and compliance.
  • Manage Albertsons Library's WorldCat Discovery user interface and knowledge base.
  • Develop and implement strategies and innovative solutions to improve external and internal user experience and maximize system functionality.
  • Coordinate with library staff and faculty to enhance resource discovery, establish and improve workflows, and deliver training and documentation for WorldCat Discovery.
  • Maintain current knowledge of national and international developments in search, discovery, cataloging, classification and subject analysis, metadata, and bibliographic and authority control.
  • Supervision and mentoring of unit staff; hiring recommendations; facilitating professional development; collaborating with unit members to review and update workflows and services to best meet user needs; establishes metrics, tracks progress, and regularly reports on the section’s work; oversight of unit funding; and approval of budget and travel requests.
  • Prepare budgetary and statistical reports. Negotiate and maintain licensing for continuing resources.
  • Pursue new opportunities for resource management, access, and discovery and for the library’s involvement in national programs.
  • Participate in the coordination of the Voyager ILS with an emphasis on the cataloging module.
  • Provide expertise and leadership on original cataloging, copy cataloging, batch loading, and database maintenance.
  • Establish cataloging and metadata policies, formats, and standards and serve as a library-wide resource and consultant on metadata issues.
  • Establish name and subject headings through the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) and serves as the primary contact to the PCC. Assists Albertsons Library catalogers in developing NACO submissions and reviews and submits all SACO and NACO submissions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships within the campus community, work with the Associate Dean to resolve issues related to the administration of the Discovery and Continuing Resources unit.
  • Serve on Library or University committees as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, and management of people and resources.
  • Knowledge of library collection management principles, resource description standards, and metadata practices.
  • Experience administering the cataloging component of an automated acquisitions system.
  • Experience using a bibliography utility, such as OCLC.
  • Ability to perform duties through utilization of a variety of office information systems, MarcEdit, bibliographic utility, integrated library systems, electronic resource management systems, discovery platforms, and web-based search engines and related resources.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a wide range of project partners
  • Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and the ability to adapt and work creatively in a complex academic environment
  • Demonstrates experience with electronic resources, including knowledge bases, openURL linking, authentication, and troubleshooting resource access and description
  • Demonstrates a deep commitment to user-centered design of search and discovery interfaces.
  • Understanding of licensing, contracts, and university compliance requirements.
  • Strong customer service, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent plus 5 years' experience in similar work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An American Library Association’s accredited master’s degree or a comparable graduate degree from a non-U.S. university
  • Two years or more of metadata experience
  • Knowledge of managing electronic resources
  • Demonstrates a deep commitment to user-centered design of search and discovery interfaces
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends, workflows, and best practices in search and discovery
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends, workflows, and best practices in cataloging and/or metadata
  • Working knowledge of description and access principles and standards
  • Professional experience in an academic library
Salary and Benefits:

Salary range starts at $69,326.40 annually and is commensurate with experience.
