THE PROGRAM:
Upward Bound is a federally funded educational opportunity program that prepares eligible high school students to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. The five-week summer program includes academic, cultural, and recreational activities.
SUMMER CAMP COUNSELORS/MENTORS:
Camp Counselors/Mentors must monitor Upward Bound students while on campus, to promote educational aspiration and performance; supervise students' free time; lead small groups, including planning and facilitating educational, cultural, and recreational events; maintain communication with academic staff regarding students' progress in classes; assume responsibilities for assigned aspects of residence hall programs; handle routine discipline problems; provide tutoring and advising to individuals and groups of students; assist in monitoring the Food and Nutrition Program; promote a community of mutual respect and trust. Two Head Camp Counselors/Mentors will be hired for the preparation and duration of the annual Upward Bound Summer Session beginning May 22, 2024 through June 28, 2024. This live-in position is ideal for graduate students, college sophomores, juniors, seniors, as well as former and current teachers / counselors. TRIO alumni and non-TRIO affiliates are also encouraged to apply.
REQUIREMENTS:
- College students must be a sophomore, junior, or senior level student concluding May 2024.
- Must serve as a positive role model and have the ability to establish rapport with high school students. Experience supervising youth is preferred.
- Must have a solid academic record and excellent people skills. Experience leading small groups and tutoring is desirable.
- Must have strong communication and leadership skills.
- Must be willing to be a hands-on team player with staff and students.
COMPENSATION:
$2,000 for the five-week program (Monday through Friday each week), including mandatory advance training and planning time; six hours of paid tuition at Cameron University, to be used Summer or Fall of 2024, with a single occupancy room and board package valued at over $3000.
