Job Description Summary
BASIC FUNCTION:
Plan, organize, direct, and implement all aspects of a highly competitive collegiate sailing team.
Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Promote fair play and good sportsmanship at all practices and competitions.
Uphold, enforce, and adhere to all URI policies and procedures.
Adhere to and enforce safety guidelines for on-water sessions as stipulated by the U.S. Coast Guard, Towns of South Kingstown and Narragansett and the URI Sailing Facility guidelines and regulations.
Conduct tryouts and select sailors to form a competitive intercollegiate sailing team.
Attend and coordinate all team practices.
Schedule and coordinate all team-related events including practice, team meetings, workouts, and regatta participation.
Organize all home events including securing race management officials as specified in NEISA regulations.
Accompany team to select regattas each weekend during the fall and spring racing seasons.
Perform ongoing evaluations of sailors to monitor their development and determine weekly regatta assignments.
Monitor the academic progress and eligibility of all student athletes.
Oversee the recruitment process of prospective student athletes.
Work with the Dean of Admission or their designee to track the applications of recruits and their admissions status.
Maintain awareness and understanding of the United States Sailing Association (USSA), Inter-collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA), and New England Sailing Association (NEISA) rules and regulations that includes vast knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) and the ICSA Procedural Rules.
Manage and develop the team’s competitive schedule through NEISA established procedures and policies.
Attend ICSA and NEISA annual scheduling meetings.
Establish a workout training regimen for both in-season and off-season.
Maintain office hours and availability to meet with sailors during the academic year.
Oversee the development of the team’s annual budget and management team finances in cooperation with the team’s executive board and the Assistant Director, Competitive Sports.
Work with the Sailing Team Advisory Council regarding all strategic decisions, financial outlook, coaching needs, and capital equipment acquisition.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Attend select University functions as directed by the Assistant Director, Competitive Sports.
Attend URI Sailing Team Advisory Council (STAC) meetings as required.
Oversee the maintenance of the team’s sailboat and powerboat fleets and other equipment.
Assist with fundraising and alumni engagement activities, in cooperation with team’s executive board, the URI Foundation and Alumni Engagement (URIFAE) and the Assistant Director, Competitive Sports.
Perform other duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:
US Sailing Level 2 instructor Certification. Rhode Island Boating Safety Certification or ability to obtain within two months of employment; Current first aid and CPR/AED certifications or ability to obtain within two months of employment; US Center for SafeSport Certification or ability to obtain within two months of employment.
Required Qualifications
REQUIRED:
1. US Sailing Level 2 Instructor Certification or higher.
2. Rhode Island Boating Safety Certification or ability to obtain within two months of employment.
3. Minimum of one year of sailing coaching experience at the junior, high school, or college level.
4. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
5. Demonstrated proficiency with written communication skills.
6. Demonstrated computer skills.
7. Demonstrated ability to work with college students, alumni, staff, and donors.
8. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
9. Current first aid and CPR/AED certifications or ability to obtain within two months of employment.
10. US Center for SafeSport Certification or ability to obtain within two months of employment.
11. Willingness to work evenings and weekends.
12. Willingness to travel locally, regionally, and nationally.
Preferred Qualifications
PREFERRED:
1. Bachelor’s Degree.
2. Demonstrated evidence of US Sailing Level 3 Coach Certification or higher.
3. Minimum of three years of sailing coaching experience at the junior, high school, or collegiate level.
4. Minimum of one year of sailing coaching experience at the college level.
5. Demonstrated experience in boat repair and maintenance.
6. Demonstrated experience with fundraising initiatives.
