Job Description Summary

The Head Club Coach, Sailing manages and facilitates all aspects of coaching the sailing team, including practices, regattas and team travel. This position also reinforces safety and helps minimize risk and potential injury of any student participants in sailing.

Essential Duties

  • Oversees the participation of the Bentley Sailing club at activities and events where they are requested to be present.
  • Conducts practices off site (at the Harvard Boathouse) in a professional and organized manner.
  • The head coach is responsible for attending all practices and competitions (regattas) with students including travel to any regattas out of the region.

Other Duties

  • Manages the student participants by reinforcing commitment to academic standards while participating in an extracurricular team.
  • Ensures the balance between needs of the team and time away from campus for practices and competitions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in coaching/instructing sailing at a level comparable with a university club sport program.
  • Previous experience working with a higher education undergraduate population or adolescent/young adult individuals, as in a school, camp, or related setting.

Work Environment

  • Position requires attendance at regattas, where weather is always an unpredictable factor and impacts the position.
  • The Sailing Club Coach must be present at all practices and competitions.
  • Work a maximum of 10 hours per week between the months of September through May.
  • Position must be able to navigate and negotiate high energy situations (like competitions) while maintaining calm, organized and collected for appropriate professional responses.
  • Travel for practices and competitions is required.


Physical Requirements

  • Position requires a high level of physical ability and knowledge of sailing practices while maintaining safe standards for student participants.
  • Must be able to complete physical requirements of sport.
