General Information
James Madison University, a Division I Member of the NCAA and Sun Belt Conference, is seeking a Head Cheerleading Coach to oversee JMU Cheerleaders and Mascots. The Head Cheerleading Coach is responsible for supporting the mission and values of the Athletics Department and JMU Spirit Program through coordination of team logistics and promoting a positive team culture. This role will oversee all administrative aspects of the program and mentor all girl, co-ed, and mascot student-athletes in a safe atmosphere with adherence to UCA/NCA and USA Cheer National Safety Standards. This position is a full-time, 12-month position with a full comprehensive benefits package.
Duties and Responsibilities
Include but not limited to:
  • Provide coaching instruction for JMU Cheer game day/promotional/performance routines while maintaining the integrity of JMU spirit, traditions, and a fan-first atmosphere; teach and evaluate proper progressions of skills adhering to all safety protocols; regularly evaluate performer readiness to perform skills safely; assess safety aspects of practice and game-day environment maintaining all safety guidelines; communicate with Athletic Training Staff of injuries and illnesses; assess team strength and conditioning needs and communicate with strength and conditioning staff.
  • Oversee administrative aspects for planning and organization of JMU Cheerleading and Mascots. Organize and schedule practices and routines; Monitor budget with adherence to budget expenditures, including travel, lodging, and meals; Supervise the care, maintenance, and inventory of equipment and attire; Coordinate necessary equipment and attire orders with Athletics Equipment Services; Assist with fundraising opportunities to benefit the program (engage alumni); Coordinate Varsity cheer camps/clinics.
  • Coordinate spirit squad and mascot appearances (Athletics, Creative Services and Fan Engagement, Duke Club, Community, Sports Properties, University) supporting promotional and fundraising events as advised, scheduling and fulfillment of community engagement requests. Positively promote spirit squad activities on social media and JMU Athletics website.
  • Conduct performance and development reviews of student-athletes each semester; Assist student-athletes with setting achievable individual academic, leadership, and performance goals; Monitor academic progress of student-athletes.
  • Oversee the tryout process, recruitment, and selection of new team members. Responsible for recruiting quality student-athletes who meet admission requirements with the potential to graduate; Manage roster numbers in collaboration with sport administrator.
  • Facilitate logistical communication and team activity calendar for student-athletes through Teamworks Hub to include all required activities.
  • Oversee and direct activities of Assistant Coach; Collaborate with Sport Supervisor, Athletic Trainer, Director of Sports Nutrition, and Strength and Conditioning coach to support a holistic student-athlete experience.
  • Conduct program in compliance with all relevant institutional, Sun Belt Conference, NCAA, and USA Cheer rules and regulations.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of collegiate coaching experience.
  • Knowledge of USA Cheer rules and safety regulations; USA Cheer Safety Credential (or the ability to obtain upon hire); CPR Certification (or the ability to obtain upon hire)
  • Knowledge of all-girl and co-ed cheerleading, stunting, and tumbling skills; Ability to provide proper instruction in the fundamentals and techniques.
  • Experience preparing, monitoring, and maintaining a budget; Fundraising experience.
  • Effective communicator, well organized, and detail oriented.
  • Ability to work extended days, weekends, and holidays; Travel is required.

Preferred:
  • Prior Division I collegiate coaching experience; Prior college and/or high school cheerleading experience.
  • Prior competition experience.
  • Spirit program camp/clinic coordination.
  • Master’s degree.
