Job Summary

The Hazardous Materials Technician position is an entry level position within EH&S that supports both campus research and health operations at UCSF. Primary duties include testing of emergency shower and eyewash equipment, collection of medical waste from research laboratories, performing radiation surveys, and assisting other technicians to prepare and decontaminate patient rooms used for radiation therapies.  

The position is part of the Hazardous Materials Management (HMM) group within EH&S and reports to the HMM Operations Supervisor.  As an entry level position within HMM, EH&S technicians are eligible to apply for more advanced Senior EH&S technician positions once they gain more experience and demonstrate competency in EH&S technician duties.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) is responsible for promoting environmental stewardship and a safe workplace at UCSF while helping to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to occupational safety and the environment


Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or GED and one year of experience in an environmental health and safety program, or two years of college including appropriate science courses; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license
  • Skills in basic mathematics including algebra
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and the ability to wear appropriate personal protective clothing, including a full-face respirator is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Previous experience working with hazardous materials

License/Certification

  • Must have a valid California driver’s license
